2 Georgia players in trouble for driving infractions
Two Georgia football players are facing legal trouble for driving violations.
A bench warrant was issued for linebacker Rennie Curran last Wednesday after the junior failed to appear in court in Franklin County for a speeding ticket issued on July 4, according to a clerk in Franklin County Probate Court.
Curran, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection by the coaches, leads the SEC with 64 tackles.
Curran didn’t understand what he was required to do to answer to the speeding charge, but plans to pay the fine Thursday, said Associate Athletic Director Claude Felton. Coach Mark Richt won’t suspend Curran, Felton said.
Meanwhile, backup cornerback Vance Cuff is suspended for Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt after University of Georgia police arrested him Tuesday on charges he was driving a motorized scooter on a sidewalk with a suspended license, UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said today. He was not charged with emerging from an alley as was cited on the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Web site, Williamson said.
Cuff told police that his license was suspended and an officer confirmed that was true, Williamson said. Cuff would not have been arrested if his license wasn’t suspended.
“We have tried to communicate to the students and the student-athletes that we can’t ride on sidewalks with these motorized vehicles,” said Williamson, who said UGA police get a significant number of calls from students complaining about scooters on sidewalks. “We’re trying to meet the needs of the majority of the students.”
Cuff’s scooter was stopped when an officer approached, but he had been driving down Rutherford Street near the Butts-Mehre Building, Williamson said. That street is closed due to an expansion of the building which houses the football program.
Cuff was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday and released at 4:16 p.m. on bonds totaling $1,750.
“He used poor judgment first in the route he took and also for being on the scooter at all with a suspended license,” Richt said in a statement.
Richt and Cuff spoke for several minutes on the side early in practice on Tuesday. Cuff then went on a nearby field to run with strength and conditioning coach Dave Van Halanger.
Cuff has appeared in three games. He sustained a knee injury against Arkansas. He has nine tackles and a pass breakup.
When it goes bad......it goes ......real bad.
Have a great......"Hump Day".
