Things ....We Learned......From the Week-end
A few......Monday "short shorts" of things we learned.......Brett Favre.......forever the "gunslinger"......cost the Vikings a trip to Miami.
Payton Manning......is the best quarterback we will see in our lifetime.
I still can't......bring myself .....to root for the 'Ain'ts......I mean....Saints.
The Pro Bowl........is this Sunday......can't wait....to ......miss it.
The Atlanta Hawks......spanked Charlotte....and sent 'em home...on ....a bus.
Georgia........beat a top 10 team (Tennessee) .....by 15. How?
I've seen.....harder rain......but I really can't remember it being as bad as it was last night. Driving 35 mph ....on I-85.
Super Bowl XLIV...........Can you believe......I have seen all 43???
Have you donated.....to Haiti? I have......in my taxes....and my President has seen fit to send .....millions. So no "text" dollars from me.
So ........on this Monday.....I'm.....a little smarter. Are You?

Things....Learned....From the Week-end .....that was...
But......are we smarter?
We sure knew......this:
Mark McGwire Admits Most Obvious Thing Ever
In a carefully written, blame-shifting statement, McGwire said, "I wish I had never touched steroids ... It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."
McGwire said he took steroids during the 1998 season when he hit 70 home runs, then a record.
Your move, Bonds.
Jayson Williams Blasted When He Crashed
Williams was arrested for DWI after his vehicle swerved across four lanes of traffic before striking a tree in NYC early Tuesday morning.
Williams fractured his neck in the accident. He was arraigned in the hospital.

Wizards Players to Testify in Gilbert Arenas Case
Our sources tell us Arenas has already been called in by the U.S. Attorney but he made it clear he would not testify on grounds of self-incrimination. We're also told Crittenton has lawyered up and took the same position as Arenas.
We're also told head coach Flip Saunders came to the grand jury last week. We don't know if he actually testified in front of the grand jury or just spoke with the U.S. Attorney.
As we first reported, cops are still looking for Javaris' gun -- which witnesses have told cops he tossed into a laundry basket after the confrontation with Arenas. Our sources say someone from the team wheeled the basket out of the locker room. D.C. cops are looking at surveillance video to see if there's a shot of the basket being wheeled out.
Both players could be indicted on felony gun charges.

Hump Day.....News & Views
51 more to come. Things we are following......and you should be too:
Arenas suspended indefinitely by NBA (AP)
Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was suspended without pay by NBA commissioner David Stern on Wednesday for behavior that made him "not currently fit to take the court." A day after Arenas was photographed before a game in Philadelphia pointing his index fingers, as if they were guns, at his teammates, Stern warned the three-time All-Star that his conduct will "ultimately...
Redskins give Shanahan $35M, 5-year deal (AP)
At the podium stood Mike Shanahan, who has a $35 million, five-year contract that gives him final authority over football decisions as head coach and executive vice president of the Washington Redskins. Seated at a nearby table was Bruce Allen, the first general manager Dan Snyder has hired in 11 years of owning the team.
One of the best football minds that ever lived.....There is hope for the Redskins!
Dawson finally elected to Hall of Fame (AP)
Andre Dawson got up at 6 a.m. and went to the gym. Before going back home, he took a detour from his usual routine on the day Hall of Fame voting is announced. "I went by a cemetery to visit my mom and also my grandmother," he said. "It's the first time I had done that. I just felt a little bit more optimistic about this year, and I just wanted to share a few things at that grave...
I'm sorry.....maybe I just don't fully understand the process. Let's see.....for 8 years....Andre Dawson was on the Hall of Fame ballot....For 8 years....he came up short. Now.....in the 9 year......He's voted in. Did he suddenly become a better player? He wasn't good enough ...for 8 years........but .....now is? This is why we slam MLB ....They ....just .....don't get it. If I were Andre.....I'd say, "Thanks....but no thanks.....If you really wanted me in your Hall of fame......You should have elected me.....year 1."
Hump Day........short shots:
Georgia Tech.......laid an egg last night.

Things.....From a Seven Day Week-end

We left .......
This small, southern, college town last Tuesday.......and returned on Saturday.....and went back to work yesterday. An entire week.......of .....a great week-end. Thanksgiving Day brought 17 family members to one table.....
Smoked turkey, roasted turkey, green bean casserole, candied yams, ham, corn-on-the-cob, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, potato salad, broccoli salad, collard greens, corn bread dressing.........and so many desserts.......I can't name them all.
So........on with........things we learned:
Never.......ever.......pack a small tube of Neosporin and a small tube of toothpaste....in the same face kit.......and groggily try to brush your teeth....... on the morning after over indulging in alcoholic beverages. Even when you're hung over......that Neosporin.....just doesn't taste good.
Our family........besides the Thanksgiving Dinner......went through 10 pounds of chicken wings......2 dozen eggs........a couple of cases of beer and about 50 pounds of ice.
Thank you......Atlanta Hawks........for embarrassing us ........on national TV......
Thank you........University of Georgia.......for making us ....."proud to be a bulldog".....by beating Tech.
Speaking of Georgia Tech........in the last three decades.......Georgia........averages losing to Tech.....once in every seven years. I can live with that.
Happy Trails.......Charlie Weis ........the Notre Dame coach was fired yesterday.......but Charlie has the last laugh. The idiots at that Irish school gave him a 10 year extension in his first year.........meaning they still have to pay him the $18 million he was due to earn over the next 6 years.
Welcome back........Allen Iverson........the ink is not even dry on your retirement letter......and your former team......Philly........has offered you a contract. Take it A. I.
Tiger Woods.........should keep his golf clubs.......in a locked vault. Not a good idea to leave them open........to a jealous wife. Allegedly...
The New Orleans Saints......are.....(to borrow the phrase from the St. Louis Rams .....of the early 2000's)........"The Greatest Show on Turf"....
This was suppose .........to be the Atlanta Falcons' year. First back to back winning seasons.....ever. It does not look good.....The best Atlanta can hope for is 8-8........Thus keeping that curse alive.....of never having two winning seasons in a row........in their history.
Okay.........I'm smarter........are you?

Things......From the Week-end.....Learned & Lived

It is a ......Monday.
Are you smarter? We are.
Things.....we learned:
This new movie, "The Blind Side"........just may be a real good thing. Tell us if you've seen it.
Anything.....is possible.......in the NFL.
Georgia......losing to Kentucky.....is tough to swallow.
The Atlanta Falcons....can not....win a road game.
Things......we lived:
Another rainy week-end........in this small, southern, college town.....depressing.
Another gut wrenching loss.......by both our .....Atlanta Falcons and our beloved Bulldogs.
Working on Sunday.....I had forgotten how bad......it is.
Thanksgiving plans........worth the wait....looking so forward to a week in Cary, NC.
We will be on the road.......in Cary....in North Carolina ...for all of this coming week.
Hope all of you will have a great Thanksgiving......

Happy Trails.........Uga VII

It was around 5:45 pm yesterday afternoon while I was watching one those judge shows.....when......low and behold......Fox 5 news in Atlanta.....broke in....with...."Breaking News".
I immediately sat up in my chair......and mused, "Plane crash? Terrorist attack? Murder suicide? Child kidnapping? Bank robbery? Car chase? Train wreck? An assassination?
No.........just a dead .....dog.
The University of Georgia's mascot......an English bulldog.......at age 4..... had died suddenly....of a heart attack.
And ......it seems .....the entire Bulldog Nation......is in mourning. Some dire hard fans even took today off. Others cried at their desks....the local sports talkies ( at least here in Athens) were on the verge of tears....as they remembered .......Uga.

Those who know me.......know that I love animals.......especially dogs.
But I do put everything in perspective......
This was a mascot.......a dog........an overweight dog. Who just ......laid around.....his whole short life.
My hope is........some day.......(and I can only hope) .....these same people......with all this love and passion......for a dog.....will see fit to share that love and passion......
With fellow human beings....
Ya think?

Hump Day.....News & Views

A rather slow day ....in the sports world......but.....
We think......the world wide leader (ESPN) did one heck of a job....in the 24 straight hours of college basketball to jump start the season.
The University of Georgia basketball team.....is .....well.....just not that good. Last night they lost to a mid major team (Wofford).....at home.
The University of Georgia football team is a 9 point favorite against Kentucky. This team has not beaten a quality team.......all year....by more than 7......Does Vegas know something?
I know it's early.......but these Atlanta Hawks...are sure looking good.
Finally......from our friends at "on-this-day.com":
Sports History
1943 - Philadelphia Phillies President William Cox was banned from baseball for betting on his team.
1949 - Jackie Robinson (Brooklyn Dodgers) was named the National Leagues Most Valuable Player.
1951 - Chuck Connors (Los Angeles Angels) became the first player to oppose the major league draft. Connors later became the star of the television show "The Rifleman."
1985 - Joe Theismann (Washington Redskins) broke his leg after being hit by Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants). The injury ended Theismann's 12 year NFL career.
1996 - Chris Boniol (Dallas Cowboys) tied an NFL record when he kicked seven field goals against the Green Bay Packers.
1997 - The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays participated in their initial expansion draft.
Have a great ........Hump Day!

Things......We learned from the Week-end

Today......it was 77 degrees in this small southern college town. Rather warm......on a November day.....even in the deep south.
Could this be the start of........dare we say........."global warning"?
Just asking.......
Here's what the week-end gave us.......and some things we learned:
Happy Trails........A. I.
Iverson leaves Memphis by mutual consent - Washington Post
MIAMI (Reuters) - Ten-times NBA All-Star guard Allen Iverson has left the Memphis Grizzlies just a few months after joining them as a free agent.....Monday short shorts:
The Atlanta Falcons.....are just an average......8-8 team.
The Atlanta Hawks.......went into the Boston Garden....and soundly beat the Celtics.
Georgia......showed signs of life against Auburn.
Stanford........put up half a hundred....plus 5 ...in their 55-21 beat down of USC.
Georgia Tech.......may just be the best 1 loss team....in the nation.
Air conditioners......on.......in November?.....
It just........ain't right.

Friday Night Humor

Sent to us........From my brother-in-law......Larry.....
Enjoy:
Sad custody case...see below.
- A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Clarke County, GA courtroom drama Monday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Georgia Bulldogs whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Things......We learned from the Week-end

If......it's Monday.....
Then we should be a tad bit smarter........For ....we learned a few things.....from the week-end.
Two college football programs.......very over-rated: Georgia and USC......
Two college football teams......that are "pretenders": Oklahoma State and Iowa....
Brett Favre..........is still.......one heck of a quarterback.........
The NFL football NY Giants.........have some serious problems.....
The Tennessee Vols........are a pretty decent football team......
The Oakland Raiders.......are a bad football team.....
The Atlanta Hawks.......cannot win .......on the west coast.....ever.......
The NY Yankees.......will win the world series....
NASCAR.......is only as good.....as the last spectacular......wreck....
And ........the most important thing we learned? Set those clocks back......before....going to bed. If not.........Sunday mornings on a Daylight Savings Time week-end.......can be .....shall we say......a bit confusing.

Another View...... From Mark Bradley.....
From the Atlanta Journal Constitution & columnist, Mark Bradley:
His headline read:
Another black Saturday in Jax reveals UGA as second-rate..... Ouch!!!
8:39 pm October 31, 2009, by Mark Bradley
One is hunting a third BCS title; the other isn't bowl-eligible. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Jacksonville — The game was a total loss, but the lesson imparted need not be. After yet another lost Saturday in Duval County, this much is beyond dispute: Georgia is no longer a major player in its division, let alone the nation.
Mark Richt began his somber media briefing by saying, “Well, here we are again.” And there they were, lopsided losers. It was 49-10 last season and 41-17 this time, and for all the good work Richt did in the early part of this decade, he and his program have been lapped by Urban Meyer. And Richt, once so clever and driven, seems to have run out of ideas.
He tried the color-scheme gimmick Saturday, presenting his players with black helmets after they’d warmed up in the usual red headgear. The upshot of this was to make Georgia look like an Arena league team and to cow the nation’s No. 1 team not one whit. After 11 1/2 minutes, the guys in the orange hats led the guys in the black hats 14-0.
“It’s not the helmet,” safety Reshad Jones said. “It’s what inside the helmet.”
Well, yes. With an extra week to prepare, Willie Martinez seemed even more witless than usual. As bad as the Gators’ first two touchdowns were, the third was an affront to everything Red and Black. Facing third-and-3 at the Georgia 23 with 1:32 left in the half, Florida ran a simple option. Tim Tebow faked a handoff and burst up the middle. He scored the touchdown that put him ahead of the hallowed Herschel Walker without being touched.
“They’re a good team,” said defensive end Justin Houston. “But it seemed like every time we made a bad play, they capitalized on it.”
In the first half Georgia had eight penalties. In the second it had four interceptions. If it was to have any chance against the Gators, it had to play a clean game. Instead it authored another in a series of messes.
If we’re to believe recruiting rankings, the gulf between Georgia and Florida shouldn’t be so pronounced. But Saturday was another installment of men against boys, and it called to mind the barb Steve Spurrier sunk into Ray Goff in this stadium 18 years ago: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.”
Players go to Florida and get, to invoke another Spurrier-ism, coached up. Players come to Georgia and are left to their own devices. Martinez is a substandard defensive coordinator, and no other position coach can be said to have done fabulous work. (Unless you count Kevin Butler, who isn’t a coach but who did sire the prodigious punter Drew Butler.)
Said Richt: “We’re 4-4 this season. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the program. I think it’s an indictment of where we are this year.”
Except Georgia has underachieved three times in the past four seasons, and as Richt himself noted Saturday: “There’s no guarantee of a bowl. The question is, will we play a game when we don’t do something that hinders us from being the best we can be?”
The Bulldogs have never lost more than four games under Richt, but they’ve never been 4-4 under this coach, either. Regarding possible changes, he said: “It’s not good to make decisions within minutes of an emotional game. You’ve got to settle your mind and settle your spirit, and then see where you are.”
As darkness fell on Halloween 2009, Georgia was again where it has been too often. The program that has all the resources was left to wonder why it has fallen so far behind Florida. And the ugly truth has never been more apparent: Florida might or might not have better players, but it absolutely has better coaches.

Time ....for ....Some Changes.....

We ...rarely .....make posts...on the weekends.........but........
Can't help this one. Take a look:
| Florida 41, Georgia 17 |
The game started.......with UGA....using yet another gimmick.....Black helmets........black pants....
Note to Georgia: If you have to revert to gimmicks......then .....you're not that good.
Georgia just got humiliated ...........on national TV......and ..........it was not even that close.
Joe Cox........the UGA quarterback........threw three interceptions.........and it just got worse.
This Georgia team......is not that good.
Too many penalties ............no rushing yardage.......equals.........losses.
Our take?
Fire the entire coaching staff........
Georgia had a bye week..........a whole week off to prepare.........it looked....in this game....Florida had the week off.
Totally ......unacceptable......
Defensive Coordinator........FIRED!!!
Offensive Coordinator........FIRED!!!
Head Coach????????
Fired..........
Mark Richt might have been the right man for the job........10 years ago.....but this is 2009....and with Urban Meyer, Nick Saban ........and others.......
Mr. Richt........is a little out of his league.

Thoughts.....on a Friday.....

A rainy night .....in Georgia.....
In this small southern college town......it is gloomy and raining. It is almost Halloween. It is late October....the leaves are a changing......the mornings are cool.....
Fall........is in the air.
Michael Jackson (God rest his soul) and his movie ....."This is it"......is breaking box office records.
The NY Yankees...came alive and won game 2 of the world series to even it at...1-1.
Why can't........people drive normally .....when it rains in the ATL?
I sure hope.......UGA doesn't embarrass itself....against Florida.
The ...."Worlds' largest Outdoor Cocktail Party"....is tomorrow......
Georgia--Florida..........or Florida--Georgia.........depending on your school.
It's a ........"border war" .....none the less.
And..........It's Halloween.
And.......the end of ....."Daylight savings time".
Can ......it get any better?

It must be "Hump Day"....that day ....slap in the middle of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.........and Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The one day.....where we can finally see the week-end a coming. Wednesday.....mid week. Awesome.
Some stuff......we're following:
No way....Jose.....Roger Goodell on Rush Limbaugh's bid for St. Louis…
Sources: Checketts to drop Limbaugh
By now, you have all heard how Rush Limbaugh wants to become a minority owner of the St. Louis Rams. Well......it ain't going to happen. Rush.......the leader of the republican party's ultra-conservatives...has made a lot of money.....millions....making outrages statements.....on his radio show.
He has that right.......for this is America....But......it has its consequences ......The NFL doesn't need Rush.....or his controversy.....or his money. End of story. It will never happen.
Happy ....99th birthday anniversary to former UCLA coach, John Wooden. Perhaps the greatest college coach in our life time....the facts:

From bad to worse.......in Athens...
Your team is 3-3......losers of 2 straight.....an uprising from the Dawg nation....and now this: (from the Athens Banner Herald)
2 Georgia players in trouble for driving infractions
Two Georgia football players are facing legal trouble for driving violations.
A bench warrant was issued for linebacker Rennie Curran last Wednesday after the junior failed to appear in court in Franklin County for a speeding ticket issued on July 4, according to a clerk in Franklin County Probate Court.
Curran, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection by the coaches, leads the SEC with 64 tackles.
Curran didn’t understand what he was required to do to answer to the speeding charge, but plans to pay the fine Thursday, said Associate Athletic Director Claude Felton. Coach Mark Richt won’t suspend Curran, Felton said.
Meanwhile, backup cornerback Vance Cuff is suspended for Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt after University of Georgia police arrested him Tuesday on charges he was driving a motorized scooter on a sidewalk with a suspended license, UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said today. He was not charged with emerging from an alley as was cited on the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Web site, Williamson said.
Cuff told police that his license was suspended and an officer confirmed that was true, Williamson said. Cuff would not have been arrested if his license wasn’t suspended.
“We have tried to communicate to the students and the student-athletes that we can’t ride on sidewalks with these motorized vehicles,” said Williamson, who said UGA police get a significant number of calls from students complaining about scooters on sidewalks. “We’re trying to meet the needs of the majority of the students.”
Cuff’s scooter was stopped when an officer approached, but he had been driving down Rutherford Street near the Butts-Mehre Building, Williamson said. That street is closed due to an expansion of the building which houses the football program.
Cuff was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday and released at 4:16 p.m. on bonds totaling $1,750.
“He used poor judgment first in the route he took and also for being on the scooter at all with a suspended license,” Richt said in a statement.
Richt and Cuff spoke for several minutes on the side early in practice on Tuesday. Cuff then went on a nearby field to run with strength and conditioning coach Dave Van Halanger.
Cuff has appeared in three games. He sustained a knee injury against Arkansas. He has nine tackles and a pass breakup.
When it goes bad......it goes ......real bad.
Have a great......"Hump Day".

An Uprising...........in Athens

In this small, southern, college town......
The natives are circling the wagons......the "Bulldawg Nation".....is up in arms.....the sky is falling....it's doom and gloom.
For their beloved University of Georgia football team.......is 3-3. and has lost 2 games in a row....(to then 4th ranked LSU, 20-13.....and last Saturday to an un-ranked Tennessee team, 45-19.)
"Fire Mark Richt!!!"......."Fire (Defensive Coordinator) Willie Martinez!!!!"......"Fire (Offensive Coordinator) Mike Bobo!!!"........"Bench QB Joe Cox!!!!"......and finally, "Fire the Bulldog mascot, Uga VII!!!!"
These headlines saturated message boards all across the south.
Blind passion...can be a dangerous thing. Expectations can be even more dangerous.
Last year, these very same dogs.......were pre-season #1....in everybody's poll. Losses to Alabama, Florida, and Georgia Tech......rendered them to a 10-3 record.....but still ended up in the top 10 in the final poll.
This season........UGA started out ranked #15......despite losing Matthew Stafford (the #1 pick in the NFL draft), the best QB in the nation....and losing Knowshon Moreno (drafted 7th), arguably , the best running back ....

Still........these blind loyalist.....thought all Georgia needed to do was ..."reload"......and still contend for the SEC championship.......as well as the national championship.
To the "Bulldawg Nation": Take the blinders off. Look to the north.....there is Tennessee, with a young new coach in Lane Kiffin......Look to the west, with that beast of a team (Alabama), coached by Nick Saban......and ....yes....look to the south, with Florida, led by a guy named, Urban Meyer.
The competition in the SEC is brutal......gone are the days where one team beats every opponent, 50-7.......and goes 12-0.
Reality check.........since coming to Georgia, Mark Richt is 85-23....with 2 SEC championships, and 5 top 10 finishes......in the last 7 years.
Mark Richt did not .......get ...."dumb" over the winter. He will assess the season......evaluate the coaching stall........make changes where needed.......and all will be well.....in the "Bulldog Nation".
