Going....going...going........Gone!

1-2-3-4........

Four games.....four losses.

For the Atlanta Hawks.......it was four and out.    The most lopsided series...in NBA history.

Enough said.

Blow this team up.   They have no heart.....no coaching.....no chemistry..no ....nothing!

Hawks.......Magic........Game 2

The Atlanta Hawks ....play as well as they can play....and for 3 quarters...it was good enough.

Then came that 4th quarter.....and....as much as the Atlanta fans hate to admit it.....

Orlando is the better team.

Thus.......Orlando 2....Hawks 0.

Everything you need to know from the Magic's 112-98 win over the Hawks in Game 2

Magic vs. Hawks
Vince Carter gets up for a reverse slam against the Hawks. (Stephen M. Dowell, Orlando Sentinel)
The Orlando Magic defeated the Atlanta Hawks 112-98 in Game 3 of the teams' Eastern Conference semifinal series Thursday night at Amway Arena. Led by Dwight Howard's 29 points and 17 rebounds, both game highs, the Magic outscored the Hawks 63-41 in the second half.

The turning point

Orlando trailed 57-49 at the half, but the Magic surged in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Even with Howard going to the locker room for a stretch to have his bloody nose examined, the Magic started the second half with an 8-0 run to regain the lead.

"We just fell apart to start the third quarter to give them momentum to get back into the game, and then it was back and forth in that third quarter," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said.

The hero

Vince Carter started slowly, scoring only four points in the first half. But he stepped up his play markedly in the second half by scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.

"I was just trying to make plays," Carter said. "Just patience is the most important thing in my mind. In the first half, they were going to zone on my pick-and-rolls and just made me give it up. I didn't want to force anything, just go as far as possible, move the ball. And those guys started hitting shots, which inevitably opened up the lanes for me in the second half, and once I saw they were open, I just tried to take advantage it."

The goat

Hawks starting point guard Mike Bibby played only 13 minutes, 41 seconds and he often looked like a significant defensive liability against Jameer Nelson. Bibby finished with three points and one assist.

Stan said what?

"Well, they missed some shots and that helps. And, then again, I thought that Vince made great plays. But we were able to do a better job defensively and on the boards in the fourth quarter, and I think that was really the key." --Magic coach Stan Van Gundy on why the Magic outscored the Hawks 28-15 in the fourth quarter

Digits 2 Dig

0 After committing three personal fouls during the first half, Howard had no fouls in the third quarter.
21 Just under 21 minutes elapsed in the game before Carter made his first field goal. His basket -- an eight-foot running hook shot -- cut Atlanta's lead to 48-43 with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter.

96.8 The Hawks made 30 of their 31 free-throw attempts. That's a 96.8 percent success rate.

A Punch......in the Stomach!

At around 11:00 pm EDT last night,  with the Atlanta Hawks up by 9 on the Milwaukee Bucks  with 4 minutes left......I went to bed.   I went to sleep confident these Hawks were going to go up 3-2 in the series  and close it out Friday in Wisconsin.

Well........a funny thing happened in those last 4 minutes.

You can imagine my surprise.....when I saw this headline....this morning:

Bucks 91, Hawks 87, Game 5

AP

Brandon Jennings reacts after the Bucks scored in the fourth quarter.

Keep counting 'em out, all you NBA experts. These Milwaukee Bucks will just keep fighting to the end. The Hawks found that out the hard way on Wednesday as the Bucks got off the mat to grab a stunning 91-87 victory at Philips Arena. »Read Full Article(121)

It was like....getting punched in the stomach!

How can a team......so talented.....so gifted.....lose.....at home......blowing a 9 point lead...in 4 minutes?

Then again......this is......Atlanta......and .....these are the .......Hawks.

Good........But not yet.....Great

The Atlanta Hawks....

Are a good basketball team.    They are 46-26  with 10 games left in the regular season.   They are comfortably seated  in the 4th spot in the NBA east....Trailing Cleveland, Orlando, and Boston.

Good......but not great.   Great teams don't lose games like the Hawks did last night in Philadelphia.

Great teams ......go on the road ......and win.

Good teams.....are .....well ....competitive.   Which is exactly what the Hawks were.....and ....are.

Last night ........against an under-manned  Sixer team,  the Hawks lost.  This is a Sixer team with a record of 26-47.   A Sixer team....minus Allen Iverson and   Louis Williams  due to injuries......etc.

Welcome Back.....Joe Johnson

Last night.....the Atlanta Hawks beat the Charlotte Bobcats....in dramatic fashion thanks to Joe Johnson.

I tuned in to this game at tip-off.   Hey .....ATL.....where were you?   The building was half empty.   Is Atlanta on CPT?  (Colored People Time)?

Fortunately for the Hawks.....the seats were filled .....by the third quarter.....but.....I know traffic is bad....but these Negroes.....need to show up......on time....and support  the team.

Hump Day.....News & Views

It's.....a Wednesday!

Wakey.......wakey......It's  "Hump Day".    It's mid January.....it's cold.....it's winter time.

In this ......small,  southern,  college town....we are following sports news as well as "regular" news.......for we are equal opportunists........in our never ending appetite for the juicy stories available ......on this "internet".

Here's some of that........"stuff":

NFL players go to the Hill about contract

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants NFL Divisional Playoffs

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A group of 25 NFL players has gone to Congress about a possible lock-out during negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.
The group included 20 active and five retired players, including NFL Players Union President and Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae and Philadelphia Eagles place-kicker David Akers.
"We're just letting the members of Congress know that we are not trying to walk away from the game, that we want to play," Akers said after an eight-hour meeting Wednesday with more than a dozen members of Congress. "We're just trying to make sure that they know what issues are out there and that the players are united to do whatever we can to have a fair negotiation with the owners, so that we can keep this great product on the field."
The members of Congress included Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis.

Phillips to lead Cowboys next two seasons

Published: Jan. 21, 2010 at 2:22 PM

Cowboys head coach Phillips walks onto field before game against Redskins in Landover, Maryland

IRVING, Texas, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips has a contract to lead the NFL team for at least the 2010 and 2011 seasons, team owner Jerry Jones said Thursday.

Phillips' tenure was rumored to be in doubt before the team finished strong and won the NFC East with a 11-5 record. Dallas was ousted in the divisional playoffs, however.
The Cowboys are 33-15 with two division titles in three seasons under Phillips.
Jones, at a season-ending news conference, said, Phillips was a "better head coach than he was three years ago and is a better head coach than we when went into training camp (last summer.)
"We want to build on the foundation we've put in place the past three years."
Jones also said he "saw the team moving in the right direction. It's embracing Wade's leadership as head coach."
Dallas is the third NFL head coaching full-time position for Phillips. He led the Buffalo Bills in 1998-2000, going 29-19, and was coach of the Denver Broncos in 1993-94, finishing 16-16. He also served as interim head coach for New Orleans (0-2) and Buffalo (0-1).

A bit of a surprise here.....But Jerry Jones owns the team.  He can call his own shots.  If I was a Cowboy fan.....there's reason to worry.....in Big D.

Serena Williams faces fines at the US Open Tennis Championship in New York

MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Serena Williams sailed into the third round of the Australian Open in dominating fashion Thursday in Melbourne.

Williams dominant in second round win

Williams, who is also the tournament
defending champion, faced only two break-point situations in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Petra Kvitova. She won nine consecutive games at one point and won 30 of 33 points when she got her first serve, which was 66 percent of the time.
Williams draws No. 32-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who as a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Andrea Petkovic Thursday, in the third round.
No. 4-seeded Carolina Wozniacki was on the court just 65 minutes in a 6-3, 6-1 pasting of Julia Goerges, sixth-seeded Venus Williams also claimed a straight-set win, knocking off Sybille Bammer 6-2, 7-5 while No. 7 Victoria Azarenka topped Stefanie Voegele 6-4, 6-0. Also, No. 9 Vera Zvonareva defeated Iveta Benesova 6-0, 6-3 and 10th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska swept past Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 6-2.
There were a pair of upsets Thursday with 20th-seeded Ana Ivanovic falling 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4 to Gisela Dulko and No. 21 Sabine Lisicki being ousted by Alberta Brianti 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
No. 13-seeded Samantha Stosur defeated Kristina Barrios 7-5, 6-3 and No. 16 Na Li rallied to beat Agnes Szavay 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 among wins by highly seeded players.

Our very first.....Serena sighting of the year.  It will not be out last.

NBA: Atlanta 108, Sacramento 97

ATLANTA, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Jamal Crawford came off the bench to score 20 points Wednesday and lead the Atlanta Hawks to 108-97 decision over Sacramento.
Crawford, a leading candidate for the NBA Sixth Man Award this year, hit 7-of-12 shots and registered a key four-point play in the fourth period. He hit a 3-pointer as he was being fouled with 7:11 remaining and his ensuing free throw gave Atlanta a 91-78 cushion.
Crawford is averaging 19 points a game in his last eight contests.
Joe Johnson added 17 for the Hawks and Josh Smith had 16. Atlanta stayed a half game in front of Orlando at the top of the Southeast Division.
Sacramento, losers of five in a row, was led by Tyreke Evans with 24 points and Kevin Martin with 23.

Don't look now......but these Hawks are in first place in their division.    Go Hawks!

Have a great......."Hump Day"
