Things we learned:

Boston and Los Angeles.....will .....again play in the NBA finals.

The Atlanta Braves.....won 5 in a row....and are now in 2nd place.

The Cleveland Cavaliers ....fired their coach.

B P.......has an ugly....oily....mess on their hands in the gulf coast.

Lena Horne.....has died.

The Super Bowl....will be played in New Jersey.....in 2014....outdoors.

From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

A 9th-inning nightmare
The Atlanta Braves scored seven runs in the 9th inning, capped off by a walk-off grand slam by Brooks Conrad that went off the glove of Laynce Nix, to beat the Reds 10-9 this afternoon.

And.....from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Things....Learned....From the Week-end .....that was...

In this small,  southern,  college town.......

Summertime....is here.   Afternoon thundershowers.....temperatures in the low 90's......humidity up near 100%.......and the flies.....oh the flies.

And it is still only the middle of May.   Summer does not officially arrive until June 21.   Go figure.

Monday asks that question.   Are we smarter today?  Did we learn .....anything?   From the Weekend?

Well........here's what we at 5 on Five learned......with the help of a few of our friends:

The Atlanta Braves.......are not as bad........as we thought they were:

Atlanta Braves (18-19)

Last game: May 16, Atlanta Braves 13 - Arizona Diamondbacks 1
Next game: vs. New York Mets, May 17 7:10pm ET
www.braves.com

The Bravos took 2 of 3 from Arizona and have now won 10 out of their last 15 games.

The Boston Celtics........maybe old......they maybe tired.....but ......they could....beat the Magic:

Boston Celtics (50-32)

Last game: May 16, Boston Celtics 92 - Orlando Magic 88
Next game: @ Orlando Magic, May 18 8:30pm ET
www.nba.com

Things......I think ...I think:

The NBA Play-offs......lasts way....too long.
6eVoice.....and GaPeach913  (bro & sis).......just got back from a 7 day  cruise...with their significant others.......I am a bit .....jealous.

My daughter,  Madison....has 2 more days of teaching school.....before her summer vacation....again....I am a bit ......jealous.

I just don't ......have the energy ...or time.....to mow my own lawn anymore.
Why do 18 wheelers.......continue to get in the fast lane...attempting to pass....and can only get up to 65 mph?

So.......it's a Monday......Are you smarter?

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Oh....To Be an Atlanta Fan...It Ain't Easy......

That roller-coaster ride ......we rode with our ATL teams the past 6 days.....went a little like this:

The "best of times"......

Over the week-end.....5 wins.......in  3 days.   The Braves swept the Astros 3-0......And the Hawks went into game 6.....at Milwaukee.......Friday night......beat the Bucks.   Then came back to the ATL   Sunday to close them out in game 7.

5 wins........3 days.

And then?

The "worst of times"........

Tuesday comes........The Braves lose their 9th in a row on the road.......and the Hawks?

They lose by 43........Yes.........43!

To Orlando........in game 1!

Tonight.......well......hang on........the roller-coaster ride......continues.

Things ....We Learned......From the Week-end

Today......we feel smarter....for we learned a few things...

Holyfield, 47, Wins by Knockout

The 47-year-old former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 knockouts) knocked out 41-year-old Frans Botha (47-5-3) of South Africa with 2 minutes 5 seconds left in the eighth round Saturday night in Las Vegas. It was Holyfield’s first fight since Dec. 20, 2008.

Wow.....is Holyfield still fighting?

Baseball is back!  The boys of summer have begun their marathon run.....of fun.   My beloved Atlanta Braves are 3-3.   Thus .....a .500 team.   No more...no less.

Tiger......is .....still ....Tiger.   Stripes don't change....Tiger Woods is ultra competitive.  And after taking 3 months off,  he shoots an 11 under par to place 3rd at the Masters.   And ....he drops a few "f-bombs" along the way.

Phil Michelson .....is a great golfer......and a likable human.   We have new found respect for Phil.  His wife and mother are both fighting breast cancer.   And Phil continues to fight the demons that say he can't win the big ones.   Well,  yesterday.....Mr. Phil.....won the Masters.

This yellowish green dust.......known to us down here as....pollen....is getting on my last nerve.

Spring is nice......don't you think?   75 degrees......clear......no humidity?

I'm smarter.....are you?

Hump Day.....News & Views

It is indeed.....A Wednesday......so it must be "Hump Day".   But this is a special "Hump Day",  considering the time of year it is.

Two more shopping days before Christmas.....

Yes.....Christmas 2009.   Are you done with your list?   Have you ....checked it twice?   Have you waited until the absolute......last minute?   A "Boo" for you ....if you have.

Here's what we........are following:   Courtesy of Yahoo Sports:

Vick wins Eagles' courage award (AP)

FILE - In this Dec. 6, 2009, file photo, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick(notes) smiles as he prepares for an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta. Vick won the Ed Block Courage Award, voted on by his teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles, after the once-disgraced star quarterback returned to the league after spending 18 months in a federal prison for his role in a dogfighting ring.
Michael Vick's peers appreciate his tough journey back to the NFL. Vick won the Ed Block Courage Award, voted on by his teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles. The once-disgraced star quarterback returned to the league after spending 18 months in a federal prison for his role in a dogfighting ring. "It means a great deal to me," Vick said Wednesday.

You know.......the "haters" will still hate.....and those PETA folks will have their say.....but .....this is a good thing for Vick....and his family.

Braves, Glaus agree on 1-year contract (AP)

FILE - In this Oct. 1, 2009, file photo, St. Louis Cardinals' Troy Glaus(notes) hits a double off Cincinnati Reds pitcher Carlos Fisher(notes) to drive in a run during the sixth inning of a baseball game in Cincinnati. A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, that the Braves have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract with Troy Glaus, who is likely to move to first base with Atlanta. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is not final.
The power-hungry Atlanta Braves are hoping longtime third baseman Troy Glaus can fill the team's void at first base. The Braves have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract with Troy Glaus, a person with knowledge of the negotiations to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is not final.

Honestly.....I have not done the research.   Who is this guy......and .....why have I never heard of him?

Henry's teary fiancee speaks at funeral (AP)

Seini Henry, daugther of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, shows a message to Henry before a memorial service in Westwego, La., Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009. Henry, who grew up in nearby Belle Chasse, died Thursday, Dec. 17, after falling out of the back of a pickup truck driven by his fiancee, Loleini Tonga.
Chris Henry's fiancee wept as she spoke about the late Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tuesday, saying that while she often got credit for helping him stay clear of trouble, he changed her life as well. Henry, 26, was killed after he fell out of the bed of pickup truck driven by his fiancee, Loleini Tonga, during what police called a domestic dispute.

Why.....is this women.....not in jail?   She was.....driving that truck.....wasn't she?

Things.......I think....I think:

That ....."Christmas Spirit"......is only for all people.....under the age of 10.

After that.......it's a dog eat dog fight......at malls all across this great nation.

How did .......I ever get around......without my GPS Garmin?

I think......I'll do a ham for Friday......as in warming a fully cooked,  sliced, spiral  one.

I wish.......one day......in my lifetime.....I can take the whole month of December...off.

But.....you gotta eat.....and I do kind of enjoy.....some of the finer things in life.

Have.......a great "Hump Day".

Things.....We Learned.......From the Week-end...

MLB Umpires.....are the most sensitive people.....On the planet!

ESPN - Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino was ejected from the outfield in the top of the seventh inning on Sunday.

Victorino threw his arms up after a pitch by Rodrigo Lopez to Florida's Wes Helms was called a ball.

Home plate umpire Ed Rapuano promptly tossed him. Victorino ran in from center, but was restrained by teammates.

Are you kidding me? 50,000 screaming fans.......a batter in the box........both dugouts yelling....and this umpire sees the center fielder..........raise his arms in discuss........and tosses him from the game?

Hey ........Ump.......try paying more attention to that strike zone.......and not a guy 300 yards away. Whatever made these guys think they are the kings on the diamond? There has never.....and will never .....ever be a ticket to a major league game.....sold.......because.......of the umpires.

Wear your blue.......call strikes and balls........safes and outs.....fairs and fouls.....and then....just go........preferably..... away..........and preferably........quietly.

Maybe..........Junior........is .......just not....that good!

Dale Earnhardt ....... (rest his soul) was a great race car driver....."The Intimidator".....fearless........driven.....NASCAR fans most popular guy. Dale, Sr. has passed on . And the the NASCAR gods named his son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr as the heir apparrent to the racing throne.

And while Dale Jr. remains NASCAR's most popular driver to date...........We here at 5 on Five.....beg to ask.......why? No wins this year...... one in 2008.......none in 2007..........and one each in 2006 and 2005. Not since 2004.......has Jr. won more than once (6 times in that 2004 season) while still racing with DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.).

Since then.......Dale has had a falling out with his step-mom.......Left DEI........fired a crew chief....and still has trouble finishing in the top ten.

Today at the Watkins Glen road race.....his breaks locked up......at other races this year, he's blown engines.......over run pit stops.......destroyed tires.......and all the while.....rarely competing for the wins.

Maybe........Dale, Jr.......is just not that good of a driver..........bad luck is one thing........and bad driving is another.

As equal as all these NASCAR cars are..........it is the driver ....that makes the difference.

And it's becoming very clear........there is a distinque differerence........between Dale, Sr. .......and Dale, Jr.

Some stuff.......we're thinking.....

My beloved
Atlanta braves took 3 out of 4 from the L A Dodgers.......should have swept...

Michael Vick..........remains .....unsigned....surprised? We're not.

In Georgia this weekend.......two teens were playing with a gun....they thought was not loaded..... Guess what happened?

We love you, President Obama....we voted for you.......but please, take a deep breath....take two steps backward........and chill.... you cannot solve all this country's and the free world's problems in six months.

I finally cut our grass Saturday........I started at 8:30 in the morning.....and was done by 11:00........Caution though.......the mower does not respond nicely .......to wet grass.

Finally......Here's to my parents.......and their 54th wedding anniversary.......

Finally, finally........54 years?????

54 years............a half a century..........plus four.......54 years......two scores, a decade, and another four years.

54 years...........that's 648 months...........19,710 days............waking up .....with the same person.........

Everyday.

Wow!

Have a great Monday......

Your're .......Fired!!!!!.......Part II

Future Hall of Famer.....John Smoltz........was fired today by the Boston Redsox .......

In baseball terms.....he was "designated for assignment ".......meaning Boston has ten days to either trade him........or outright release him.

In real life "regular guy" terms........he .....was given his walking papers....Your services are no longer needed. The company is moving in a different direction.

This comes on the heels of Smoltz getting rocked by the N Y Yankees last night.

Red Sox designate John Smoltz for assignment

Smoltz went 3 1/3 innings.......allowing 8 runs on 9 hits.....At 42 years of age.......his career could be over.

But..........remember the movie with Richard Pryor? Brewster's Millions? Pryor's character was a pitcher.....who could only pitch.....an inning.....one inning.

This is where John Smoltz finds himself today. A 42 year old arm.......that can only give you one.......maybe two innings.

Hello? Atlanta Braves?.......Bring Smoltz back.....for bullpen help. He will cost you ...nothing. Boston is paying his $5 million this year.

Today, Smoltz flew back to his Atlanta home to weigh his options.......

Getting fired........is ........a helluva thing.

Gone.......In a New York ........Minute

Mets and Braves Swap Right Fielders

It's a done deal........Tonight, the Atlanta Braves traded home grown right fielder, Jeff Francoeur to the New York Mets for another right fielder, Ryan Church.

After taking the city by storm when called up in 2005........Francoeurs' career....has steadily descended.

Once a two sport star....... at Parkview High....with a football scholarship to attend Clemson, Francoeur never matched that 2005 and 2006 season.

Instead of adjusting to pitchers.......The pitchers....adjusted to him.

Baseball is a mental game........the trade could be good for Jeff.

But .....in New York?

We.......will see.

An Andruw Jones........Sighting....

When last saw Andruw Jones..........

He was being unceremoniously dumped......fired......discarded......by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just one year .........and the Dodgers were cutting their losses.

Could you blame them?

Last year, Jones played in only 75 games........batted a measly .158...........with 3 home runs and 14 RBI's while striking out 76 times.

We have been harsh critics of Andruw. He.......with all that "potential".....but never asserted himself........like so many greats before him.

Talent wise.....he is the best pure center fielder.......I've ever seen play the game. With all due respects to Willie Mays......I actually saw Jones play.......live.....in person. No balls ever got over his head........nothing fell in front.

A "phenom"..........

Then........he got married.....signed a huge mega-million dollar contract.......and got lazy. Or, maybe he signed the huge deal.......and then got married.......Whatever..........he got lazy.

And when the Atlanta Braves did not re-sign him after the 2007 season..........he took off to Hollywood.

Well........fast forward to yesterday: Andruw Jones hits 3 HRs as Rangers win

Andruw........has re-invented himself with the Texas Rangers! Barely making the team in spring training, Jones has already hit 14 homers.......driven in 34 runs.....and has a respectable .250 batting average .......in 46 games.

At age 32.........his best years may be behind him.......but it's good to see........he finally.....gets it.

Too bad it could'nt be with his old team..........the Braves.

A Yahoo............Sports Minute

From Yahoo Sports........

Major League Baseball is coming up. With the help on MLB.com........and Yahoo Sports........ESPN is not the sports monopoly it once was. A breath of fresh air.......something different.......to the point. And not self promoting.

Here's a look........at last nights' games.....from " killer bees " to an Atlanta Brave sweep of the World Champion Phillies.......

It's all here..........enjoy:

Hump Day..........News & Views

Wow.......A very busy Wednesday.

North Korea wants to wipe the us off the map......A former student shoots and kills a famous high school coach.....That missing South Carolina Gov
ernor, was in Argentina, having an affair.....The Atlanta Braves shut out the N Y Yankees.......

Let's start........

With North Korea. We can say this, they have ........balls....read this:

North Korea has said it would consider interception of its ships a declaration of war, and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to start another Korean War.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," a dispatch from the official Korean Central News Agency said.

What? This is coming from a country the size of Mississippi........To keep you informed....read this....from Bing.com:

North Korea threatens US as Washington, allies watch for signs…

This story.........is sad.....and the details are sketchy.....at best. Seems an ex-student....went into a gym....and shot his ex-coach.......in a small Iowa town. From CNN:

(CNN) -- An Iowa high school football coach died Wednesday after he was shot inside the school as athletes were lifting weights, the district superintendent told CNN.

Ed Thomas had been with the school district for more than 30 years and was well-known in the region.

Ed Thomas died shortly after he arrived at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, according to a hospital statement.

He was flown to a hospital after he was shot about 8:30 a.m.at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, said Holly Fokkena, Butler County auditor.

No students were injured, although about 50 students were present at the time of the shooting, she said.

One person, an adult, was taken into custody, Fokkena said.

Superintendent Jon Thompson of the Aplington-Parkersburg Community Schools said crisis counselors were on scene to assist students who witnessed the shooting.

Thompson declined to provide more details on the shooting, saying they were not clear.

Thomas had been with the school district for more than 30 years, Thompson said, and was a well-known football coach in the region.

We will update this story.....Check Spelling

And then.......there's this governor.......a republican.......from South Carolina....From CNN:

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he has been engaged in an extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman. "I've been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford told a news conference in Columbia, the state capital. "I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina." His voice choking at times, Sanford apologized to his wife and four sons, and said he would resign immediately as head of the Republican Governors Association.

When will these right winged..........bible carrying hypocrites .......quit trying to run politics in the great.......U.S.....of A...........They...those republicans........ preach all that 'moral ' stuff .......to us.....daily. Now , this?

Read the entire story........from.....CNN:

S.C. governor tearfully admits affair, apologizes

And..........Finally.....My Atlanta Braves.......beat the N Y Yankees.....and I love the N Y headlines..........

Nothing can get any better.......than a Father-Daughter and husband- wife .......relationship...on...Fathers' Day. My Daughter........and My Mother........took me and my Daddy out to dinner....on Fathers' Day. And to make it complete.....her husband came along also. I ......so love .....my family.

So .....Tiger.......did not win the U S Open?

The Hangover........the movie ......is very good.....I hear....Haven't seen it yet....waiting....

It was so hot today..........I saw two trees.......fighting over a dog.

The Atlanta Braves........are no more...no less....than a .500 team...

The 1st hurricane of the year? Andreas..........who?

Hump Day..........News & Views

Wednesday........again....

Here's a few one-liners..........for "Hump Day".

The Atlanta Braves........have now ....lost .......3 in a row.

No more NBA.....what's a fan to do?

Will Tiger........win yet another U S Open........this week-end?

Did anyone watch Joe Buck Live.......on HBO?

Dante Stallworth........got 30 days in jail.......for killing a man....while driving drunk...

Michael Vick..........got 2 years....in a federal prison.......for being bad....to dogs.....

Shaq..........is thinking about joining the Cleveland Cavaliers...

I'm thinking......Shaq is washed up........LeBron needs more....than a "Shaq".

L A wins........fans burn police cars........why?

American Idol........was in Atlanta the other day......recruiting the next....embarrassment...

The Pittsburgh Penguins ....won hockey's Stanley Cup....Pittsburgh? City of champions?

Sammy Sousa ........he was outed by the N Y Times.....using steroids......Not surprised....

Happy Birthday........Venus Williams........you turn.....29.....today. In tennis, you're ...old..

"Welcome home, Rosco Jenkins".....is still........a very funny movie.

Two dump trucks.....passed me on I-75........today.....I was doing 85.......

KFC's.........."grilled chicken" is good...........but not as good as what I grill.

My tomato plants......are taller than me.....and the corn? 2 feet high........go figure.

Was in........Savannah, GA.......this week-end........How did we ever survive..........the heat?

Speaking of heat........it's in the upper 90,s..........in this southern, college town.

The problem with .......cutting grass........is that .....you now have to do it...all summer long.

And........the job's not done.....'till you get that weed-eater working its magic.....

3 hours.......56 minutes... that's how long the 4 &1/2 hour Savannah to Athens took me...

And.......no........I did not super speed........85 on I-16.......70....on the 2 lane roads........

I still..........don't get "twittering".....Do I care....what you're doing.....at 9 am?

Have........a .......great "Hump Day".

Hump Day News & Views

It must be Wednesday........

And according to the calenders made available to us........there are 52 of these.....in a calender year. That means 52 "Hump Days". Wow!

In this southern college town, the temperature's rising........Summer..........looms. The "hazy, hot & humid" days........await us. As we crank up our AC's ........and fans.......and other cooling devices.........let's take a look at what's happening around us.......sp
orts........and otherwise.

Magic vs. Lakers..........

Not what the networks wanted......(Kobe vs. LeBron was what ABC was hoping for).....but an intriguing match-up just the same.

Disney Land vs. Disney World............A tale of two franchises.....L A, is in the finals for the 30th time.......the Magic? Only their 2nd.

The Lakers will have Jack Nicholson (long time fan....and the "joker") sitting court side.......The Magic will have Orlando resident, and the best golfer of the planet, Tiger Woods.

Both are led by a player who came straight from high school to the pros........Kobe (
Lakers) ........and that man child, from south Atlanta..........Superman himself........Dwight Howard.

The coaches? Phil Jackson has nine rings.........championship rings.......Stan Van Gundy? Weren't they gonna fire him last year?

Regular season meetings? Orlando took 'em both. They last met........61 games ago....

Make no mistake...........Orlando is the real deal..........and they present match up problems for most of the NBA...........

But............the Lakers' front line..........is too big.......too long........too much range.......and they have the x-factor........in that cold blooded.......game on the line ..........cut-throat shooter....in Kobe.

Lakers...........in 6.

A Williams-less.......French Open.......

We don't follow tennis.........except for the William sisters , Venus and Serena.........Well, both have been ousted in the on going French Open Tournament. Bad for tennis........but a lesson for both girls.

Yes.......we know you both want more out of life than tennis.....and you're both capable of "multi-tasking" ...........But........

Tennis...........is what made you famous.......

Tennis ..........is why .......you both have made a fortune....

Tennis..........put the Williams family on a path of greatness...........

So........a note..........and some advice to Serena.......and Venus ........How about getting back to some .......training?

Tennis training..........working on .......your game. Playing in more tournaments to learn more about your competitions' game.

It can only help..........For when it all boils down..............in the end.......with all your "fashion statements"...........Hollywood connections..........and sexy dress lines..........

You both..........are still ........two women..........playing a rich.....white.....sport.....
..of spoiled elitists............You gave us a reason ..........to watch.

So.......we're begging..........get back..........in the game.

Happy Trails........Tom Glavin.......

Atlanta releases Glavine

Today, the Atlanta Braves released the 300 plus win left handed pitcher........a shoo-in hall-of -famer.....The cash strapped Atlanta franchise chose the economy way. Cut Glavin........before he was with the ball club 90 days........Meaning they won't have to pay him a $3 million bonus.

At 42..........Glavin.......vows to pitch again..........in the big leagues.......for somebody.

Tom..........get a grip. You're 42........you've never been a "power pitcher".....You've lived.....on "the corners" and
"outsmarting" hitters.

Brand new day..........Retire..........gracefully..........

Things........I ........think I think:

My daughter
got her a teaching job.......Middle school math.......May the "force" be with her..

My "great nephew" turns a year old this week-end.......

My step-daughter, Sharmain........graduates from boot camp.....in the US Army tomorrow........at a fort in South Carolina.......I'm proud of you girl!

My garden? With the help of a little watering and fertilization .....it's doing well.

Have a great ........Hump Day!

Things ....From the Week-end....Learned & More

Rain.....rain.......and more rain.......

In
this southern college town.....the rain has been constantly ......sporadic....... Rain, sun, rain....This has been going on for the past seven days. The garden is loving it........the lawn is almost all green now. And the drought we've suffered the past couple of years........seems a distant memory.

Memorial Day, 2009........

Did you pause.......at 3:00 pm? And remember all the men and women of the armed forces who paid the ultimate price ......with their lives?

NBA Play-offs........

Neither Cleveland nor Los Angeles appear to be a sure thing for the finals.....Denver and Orlando are making their own cases. Cleveland.......except for that miracle shot by LeBron....should be down 0-3...........And the Lakers? They looked slow and un-physical last night. Kobe and LeBron...........could use some help. Can you hear me .......now?

Braves sweep Toronto.......

Yes..........the Atlanta Braves swept the Toronto Blue Jays ..........3 games to none....Hitting.......scoring runs.......great pitching.......These Braves are only a game and a half out of first place..........Who would of "thunk" it!

Here come the Yankees........

Given up for dead a week ago........the Yanks reeled off 7 in a row........with A-Rod back.....and are now within a game of Boston for the lead in the AL East. Still.......the best team .......money can buy.

Which was better? The Indy 500......or the Coca-cola 600?

The Indy race........with 300,000 fans.......looked good on TV..........but still no drama.......At Charlotte, the Coca-cola 600 had the misfortune of "mother natures' " rain.......Both failed me. Just wasn't interested.......Also ........at the Coca-cola 600 ......on Sunday.......The "fly by" by the Navy's f-14's.......was a bit premature.......They flew by .......in the middle of the "National Anthem".......as opposed to flying by ..........at the end........which is what was planned.

All in all?

A great week-end..........even though the sports world......was a bit.....sub par. But I guess thats what friends and families are for.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Things ....From the Week-end....Learned & More

In this southern.......

College town.......the weather has been as unpredictable as any time I can remember. Rain....wind.....hail........lightning.....thunder........and this afternoon.....sunshine.

Things.......and thoughts.....from the week-end....

Lil Kim.....(pictured) had a "wardrobe malfunction" in last night's Dancing with the Stars....With the way she dresses.....I hardly consider this a "malfunction".....but at any rate....she is one sexy female.

Did you catch the final day of "The Masters"? Tiger and Phil.......toe to toe........but neither had anything left for the final two holes.......still riveting golf.....if golf....can be "riveting"....

It's early.....but.......The Atlanta Braves are 5-1 and tied for first in th
e NL East.

It's late......and the Atlanta Hawks have clinched the 4th spot in the play-offs.......with 2 games left. They will have home court advantage in the opening round against Miami.

Rest in Peace........Harry Kalas , baseball announcer for the Phillies and long time NFL films man.......died.......in the booth.......hours before yesterdays' game....He was 73.

R.I.P. also to Mark (The Bird) Fidrych.........In the late 70's........he was baseballs' best pitcher.....known for talking to the baseball.....Fidrych was an overnight superstar.....he was 54...

It has never happened.......no team in baseball has ever gone 0-162........but the Washington Nationals are on their way.......at 0-6.

Broke out the big bad riding lawn mower Saturday........ready for the first cut of the season.....Silence........the battery was dead........and one of the front tires was flat. Auto Zone, a new battery.....and a can of "fix-a-flat"....came through........and saved the day.

Navy Seals.......3, Somalian Pirates, 0........What a daring and precise rescue.......I can see a movie deal coming........I even have a title....."Three Bullets"........

I think.......nationwide.....and abroad.....folks are realizing, Barack Obama.......is a different kind of president.........smart, brilliant, accessible, outgoing.......but don't back him into a corner....he has "balls".......and that is a good thing for this country.

Tomorrow is ........April 15th........Have you filed?

Remember.....you may forget.......but the government never........ever.........ever.......

Post ....Hump Day News& Views

Same old Braves.....

Some things never change. After opening the 2009 major league baseball season with 2 straight wins over the defending world champion Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta bullpen imploded yesterday.

With a seven run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning........four Braves relievers' combined ineptitude.......led to 8 Phillie runs.

That 7th inning? 6 walks.........5 hits........and 8 earned runs. Philadelphia won the game, 12-11.

Ouch!!!!! From Yahoo Sports:
Down 7 in 7th, Phils beat Braves 12-11

39 wins..........0 losses..........

The University of Connecticut (UConn) womens' basketball team completed an utterly remarkable season by beating Louisville, 76-54. (
UConn wins NCAA title in 76-54 rout…)

A perfect ending to a perfect season.

Consider this.........Uconn won all 39 games by double digits....a first in college basketball.

For head coach Geno Auriemma (pictured) and his talented lady Husky team, this was UConn's 6th national championship and 3rd undefeated season. Only the Lady Vols of Tennessee have more titles ( eight).

So our congrats ..........to the women of UConn..........

Happy Trails......Marvin Webster..........

Back in the day..........he was known as "the human eraser". He stood 7 feet 1 inch tall......

Webster played 10 seasons on professional basketball for 4 teams in a career that spanned from 1976 to 1987.

From the Associated Press:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Former NBA star Marvin Webster has been found dead in a bathtub at a Tulsa hotel.

The 56-year-old Webster was discovered in his room Monday morning in the downtown Ambassador Hotel, police said Wednesday.

Foul play is not suspected and the death apparently stemmed from an illness, police spokesman Jason Willingham said. He added that the former 7-foot-1 center had been living at the hotel and employees grew concerned after not seeing him for several days.

The medical examiner office said the cause of death has not been determined.

Short stuff..........

The Atlanta Hawks are teasing us again.....they've won 2 straight...on the road.

The Masters start today at Augusta National........All eyes will be on Tiger...

Was this years mens NCAA basketball tournament as boring to you as it was to me?

Are they still playing Hockey?

Until......next time........

70 degrees....in this southern college town....

Spring.....has sprung.

If only these games meant something....

The Atlanta Braves are 13-3 in the grapefruit league known as pre-season in Major league baseball. This is the best record in all of baseball.

These games count....

Meanwhile .......the Atlanta Hawks have won 6 straight (
Hawks win 6 straight, roll by Kings)
The Hawks are holding on to the 4th spot in the NBA east. Go Hawks.......

The big dance......is here........

No.......this year 5 on Five will not have a contest..........fill out your own bracket.......keep your own score.

"Junior" disses Atlanta

Remember when? When ......

Big time Major League baseball free agents use to seem to jump at the chance to play for a class organization ....in the Atlanta Braves.......and a "player's coach" ....in manager Bobby Cox.

Fred McGriff, Andres Galaragga, Greg Maddox............to name a few.

But........my , my..........how times are a changing. This past off-season alone, the Braves have been spurned by free agents, pitcher Derek Lowe, shortstop Rafael Furcal, pitcher A. J. Burnette...........And don't forget, John Smoltz has taken he and his 41 year old arm north , to Boston.

And now? Add Ken Griffey , Jr. to that list. As late as Wednesday morning, the Atlanta papers had us believing it was a done deal:
Braves interested in signing Griffey Jr.

Today........
these headlines greeted Atlanta..........and their fans:

Griffey picks Mariners

Yes, Ken Griffey, Jr. decided to go back home. Home to the team that first signed him some 20 years ago. Seattle drafted "Junior" number one overall in the 1987 draft.

While we're happy for this "kodak moment" of the prodigal son going home......it is sad to see a once powerful and classy organization like the Braves..........lose out.......once again.......on another star free agent.
