Hump Day News & Views
Is is Wednesday?
Already?
Hump Day.....is here again. So, we'll do what we do.......on Wednesday.....Let's have some fun and see what's going on in the sports world.......and beyond.
Five stories........Yahoo.com wants you to read:

Roy's 42 power Trail Blazers by Rockets (AP
James and sloppy Cavs hold off Pistons (AP
Goodell: Vick must show genuine remorse (AP)
RCR to swap crews for Harvick, Mears (AP
Three stories from the NBA.......one from the NFL.....and one from NASCAR.....The most interesting is the Michael Vick saga. Will it ever end? The man has spent the last two years ....doing time.......prison. But ........the commissioner wants more.....he wants Vick to show ..."remorse"...........no......."genuine remorse".
Well........is this guy a mind reader......or what? Is he a psychiatrist? What ........exactly.....does Michael have to do? He has apologized..........he has lost millions of dollars........lost his following of fans.......paid his dept to society ........and now the "commish"....wants........"genuine remorse".
I must be stupid........I must not be a smart man.......but even I........simple and all.......can't seem to understand all of this.
My advice to Vick?
Hire a TV production crew...........get it on film......cry..........cry..... and cry some more. Look into the cameras..........and cry some more.....Tears........tears.......and more tears.....get some real live "close-ups"........those big brown eyes......blurred by water.....from tears.....sniffle a little.....look real sad.......
That should do it...........that's what he wants..... for you have now.....shown him ....."genuine remorse"...
With that.......
Have a great "Hump Day".......

Things have gotten......oh so bad for the Washington Nationals.......(1-10) .......in their first 11 starts of the Major League Baseball season.....
Not only is this team........which moved from Montreal (as the Expos)a few years back .....the laughing stock of the league.....seems now........their seamstress..........can't spell.
In a home game this week-end.......several National players took to the field..........wearing jerseys which incorrectly spelled Nationals..........."Natinals"
Somebody......needs to get fired over this.
This is not a little league team......with "bail bondsmen" sponsors.....Who let them out on the field?
Where is "quality control"?
Washington should be ashamed.......and I bet Montreal....is smiling today.

In Major League Baseball.......the Atlanta Braves were beaten, 10-0.............Meanwhile the L A Angels got blasted, 9-2........and while all this was going on........Cincinnati was getting clobbered, 7-0.
These three teams suffered beat-downs ........but it was mild compared to our guys in pinstripes.

Too.....Much....."Stuff"
Just in my bedroom.....just now........I just counted..........six clocks!
Or.......six fixtures or appliances or apparatuses.........where I can find out what time it is.
(1) My trusted bedside alarm clock....(2) a ship shaped desk clock my daughter gave me.....(3) My TV........(4) My desktop computer (from which I'm typing) .......(5) My company issued laptop......and...........(6) My cell phone.
Why ......do I.......a simply man.....
Need 6 time pieces?
In one room?
Too much stuff........
Looking beyond my bedroom.......let's just stick with clocks. There's one in the bathroom........and one on the oven........and one on the microwave.......
There is the DVD player and another TV in the family room..........with clocks.....
In another bedroom.....there is also a TV, alarm clock.........
In..........yet another room.....there is a clock........an answering machine........a computer..........
How many clocks is that?
Sixteen...........16.......
Now let's add the three vehicles on the property.......and ........a watch of mine .......and we're up to 20....
Twenty clocks..........
One location.....
Too.....much......stuff...........
So.......your homework assignment is............count your time pieces.......
Do you have...........too much........stuff?
Thoughts.....on a Friday....
In this southern college town.....
It's a balmy 70 degrees.......and sunny. Spring is slowly deciding to join us. After playing "hard to get" for about thirty days........Spring......is about ready to put aside the cold, wintry persona........the iciness of old man winter himself..........those unpredictable March winds.....and those powerful April showers that turned into April storms..........And after quite a few really cold April mornings..........
Spring.....has just about.....sprung........and is just about ready to warm up to all of us.
It's about.......damn time!
It's ..........the week-end folks........and all is well!!!
Happy Trails.......John Madden......
You retired from broadcasting NFL games........You were the best. An original. The best thing for the sport since Howard Cosell ......The young folks don't even realize you were .....at one time ....a Super Bowl winning coach of the Oakland Raiders........many moons ago.
They see "Madden 09".........the video game........But.......we knew you then.....
And you will be missed..........
And you left on your terms......as you did when you left coaching.....We admire you.....go.....do what Mr. Madden........wants to do.
You........have earned that right.
In the, "Wait.....he's younger than me!!!!" department.........
Boston Celtic General Manager, Danny Ainge.......you know him.....his wheeling and dealing helped produce a Boston World Championship last year..........
Well........yesterday, Danny........boy wonder..........had a heart attack........medically speaking...mild.......but still a heart attack.
His age?
50!!!!!!!!!! Yes , fiddy ............Five-O........
Which makes him younger than the trifecta here at 5 on Five..... Much..... younger than 6eVoice......and younger than yours truly and GaPeach913......(Actually 6eVoice is only 2 years our senior....but it sounded good).
But this really makes you stop..........think.......and listen...
It's about time to start taking care of our bodies........exercising.......working out.....eating right...you know ........all those things.......we ditched.....when we turned 25.
Yearly check-ups........kicking bad habits.......(does this include smoking?)
We all need to take a deep reality check.......(You guys and gals go first)
Have a great........T.G.I.F.

Hump Day News & Views
Things we are following.......
Here's to you.....Jackie Robinson....
62 years ago..........on this day.......Jackie Robinson became the first ever black baseball player to play in the major leagues......From..... nationalpastime.com:
1947 A year before President Truman desegregated the military, Jackie Robinson debuts for the Dodgers becoming the first black player to participate in a major league game this century. In front of 25,623 Ebbets Field fans, the 28-year old first baseman is hitless in three at-bats, but scores a run in the 5-3 Opening Day victory over the Braves.
Yes.......it has been 62 years.......since Mr. Robinson broke that lily-white color barrier and opened so many doors for Negro and Latin players.
He did it with talent, dignity, and foresight. And today.....God bless Major League Baseball...
For.......finally.......they have done something right. Today, every manager, coach and player.......of all 30 teams.......will wear.......not just a patch.....but the number 42 on their uniforms in recognition of Mr. Robinson......like baseball did two years ago on the 60th anniversary.
We here at 5 on Five feel this should be an annual ritual.....every April 15th.....every team...every player.......should wear that number........42.
Back to school........
Kinda........sorta.........Isiah Thomas named head coach at Florida International
Yes......he is back coaching.....after a disastrous run in the NBA........Isiah has been hired ....again.
Now I have always liked the former Detroit Piston all-star guard.......as a player. But as a GM or coach?
Let us just say..........he .....uh.......uh.....slightly ....underachieved. From the New York Times:
The Knicks went 56-108 in Thomas’s two seasons as coach, and they never had a winning record in his four years as the team president, despite a payroll that annually ranked among the league’s highest.
And........let's not forget that embarrassing sexual harassment law suit.....which cost the Knick organization $11.6 million in a settlement.
But ........this is America.....and we believe in second chances.....so give Isiah some love....and wish him well.
With that said.......we give him .......about 18 months........to f**k it up .......down there in Florida.
Happy trails.......Oscar.....
Oscar De La Hoya has announced he is retiring from boxing........at the tender age of 39.
From the L A Times:
"The Golden Boy's" Hall of Fame-bound career has seen him win 10 world championships in every division from 130 to 160 pounds while facing the elite of the sport including Floyd Mayweather Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija and Hector Camacho Sr. Along the way, De La Hoya has become boxing's undisputed superstar and his acclaimed career and popularity will be remembered for decades to come.
Now.....we've always looked upon him as a pretty boy........but.......he will be missed in the sport of boxing.
5.......short shots.....
Is "Spring" ever going to get here.......in 2009?
Will the "Hawks" make a splash.....in this years' play-offs?
Can the "Braves" find a decent relief pitcher?
When will "Fox News"......stop their Obama hatin'???
Are they.....still playing .....hockey?
Have a great ........Hump Day.

Things ....From the Week-end....Learned & More
College town.......the weather has been as unpredictable as any time I can remember. Rain....wind.....hail........lightning.....thunder........and this afternoon.....sunshine.
Things.......and thoughts.....from the week-end....
Lil Kim.....(pictured) had a "wardrobe malfunction" in last night's Dancing with the Stars....With the way she dresses.....I hardly consider this a "malfunction".....but at any rate....she is one sexy female.
Did you catch the final day of "The Masters"? Tiger and Phil.......toe to toe........but neither had anything left for the final two holes.......still riveting golf.....if golf....can be "riveting"....
It's early.....but.......The Atlanta Braves are 5-1 and tied for first in the NL East.
It's late......and the Atlanta Hawks have clinched the 4th spot in the play-offs.......with 2 games left. They will have home court advantage in the opening round against Miami.
Rest in Peace........Harry Kalas , baseball announcer for the Phillies and long time NFL films man.......died.......in the booth.......hours before yesterdays' game....He was 73.
R.I.P. also to Mark (The Bird) Fidrych.........In the late 70's........he was baseballs' best pitcher.....known for talking to the baseball.....Fidrych was an overnight superstar.....he was 54...
It has never happened.......no team in baseball has ever gone 0-162........but the Washington Nationals are on their way.......at 0-6.
Broke out the big bad riding lawn mower Saturday........ready for the first cut of the season.....Silence........the battery was dead........and one of the front tires was flat. Auto Zone, a new battery.....and a can of "fix-a-flat"....came through........and saved the day.
Navy Seals.......3, Somalian Pirates, 0........What a daring and precise rescue.......I can see a movie deal coming........I even have a title....."Three Bullets"........
I think.......nationwide.....and abroad.....folks are realizing, Barack Obama.......is a different kind of president.........smart, brilliant, accessible, outgoing.......but don't back him into a corner....he has "balls".......and that is a good thing for this country.
Tomorrow is ........April 15th........Have you filed?
Remember.....you may forget.......but the government never........ever.........ever.......

Brother .......to .......Brother.......
A very Powerful picture from Barrack Obama's trip to Britain, the picture says it all….
BROTHER TO BROTHER...
You go boy! He is sooo cool. According to one commentor, "This is the most powerful photo in the series. Remember that British Royal custom, and both U.S. and British security procedure dictate that they are not supposed to talk, touch, or shake hands, but the two brothers couldn't resist the historic moment. The Black Royal cop never imagined in his wildest dream that he would usher a Black American president into the British corridors of power. Nice." |
A Tragedy........in Anaheim.......
Why did this have to happen?
Nick Adenhart was 22 years old. He signed with the Anaheim Angels fresh out of high school at the age of 18. He was a pitcher..........with a 98 miles per hour fast ball.
At 22.......his best years in life appeared to be ahead of him.......He had just pitched 6 scoreless innings in his major league debut.......
And........we're talking about him.....in the past tense.......
Why?
Nick Adenhart .......along with two friends........was killed early Thursday morning..........broadsided in the car he was riding in........by an alleged drunk driver........a hit and run.......
Anyone who has ever lost a loved one........at such a young age.......feels the pain this family is going through.
Why?
Why now???????
Why him?????
From all reports.......he was a good kid......Just loved to play....."the game of baseball".
And .......just like that.....some drunk comes along..........and snuffs his life........away.
Of course, the drunk........will plead innocent...of the charges. His lawyers (paid to defend him) will make arguments on his behalf....
But ..........the "drunk" should just come clean.......If he had not taken that mini-van .....on the road.....had not had .......all of those drinks.....
We would not be talking about Mr. Adenhart...........in the past tense.
This sucks.......
I'm pissed............
Our thoughts and prayers.......go out to the Adenhart family.
A tragedy..........

Post ....Hump Day News& Views
Same old Braves.....
Some things never change. After opening the 2009 major league baseball season with 2 straight wins over the defending world champion Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta bullpen imploded yesterday.
With a seven run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning........four Braves relievers' combined ineptitude.......led to 8 Phillie runs.
That 7th inning? 6 walks.........5 hits........and 8 earned runs. Philadelphia won the game, 12-11.
Ouch!!!!! From Yahoo Sports: Down 7 in 7th, Phils beat Braves 12-11
39 wins..........0 losses..........
The University of Connecticut (UConn) womens' basketball team completed an utterly remarkable season by beating Louisville, 76-54. (UConn wins NCAA title in 76-54 rout…)
A perfect ending to a perfect season.
Consider this.........Uconn won all 39 games by double digits....a first in college basketball.
For head coach Geno Auriemma (pictured) and his talented lady Husky team, this was UConn's 6th national championship and 3rd undefeated season. Only the Lady Vols of Tennessee have more titles ( eight).
So our congrats ..........to the women of UConn..........
Happy Trails......Marvin Webster..........
Back in the day..........he was known as "the human eraser". He stood 7 feet 1 inch tall......
Webster played 10 seasons on professional basketball for 4 teams in a career that spanned from 1976 to 1987.
From the Associated Press:
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Former NBA star Marvin Webster has been found dead in a bathtub at a Tulsa hotel.
The 56-year-old Webster was discovered in his room Monday morning in the downtown Ambassador Hotel, police said Wednesday.
Foul play is not suspected and the death apparently stemmed from an illness, police spokesman Jason Willingham said. He added that the former 7-foot-1 center had been living at the hotel and employees grew concerned after not seeing him for several days.
The medical examiner office said the cause of death has not been determined.
Short stuff..........
The Atlanta Hawks are teasing us again.....they've won 2 straight...on the road.
The Masters start today at Augusta National........All eyes will be on Tiger...
Was this years mens NCAA basketball tournament as boring to you as it was to me?
Are they still playing Hockey?
Until......next time........
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Opening Day..........2009
Opening day........
When all of Major League Baseball.......and it's fans.....are equal.
The first game of 162........the longest schedule of any of the sports........162 games.....
April, May, June, July, August, and September...........Six months of.......baseball.
The New York Yankees to the Kansas City Royals............all equal on "opening day".
Opening day...........a new beginning.......a new start...........new stadiums.....new players....

Get ready.....for six whole months.

Testimonials.......think...before you....speak.....
From our own.......GaPeach913.....
Enjoy...
FIRST TESTIMONY:
I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow
and asked loudly, 'How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow
job?'
I turned around and walked back out and never went back.
My husband didn't say a word... he knew better.
SECOND TESTIMONY:
I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was
unhappy with the women's type I had been using.
After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the
good-looking gentlemen who works at the store.
He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and
said, 'I think I like playing with men's balls'
THIRD TESTIMONY:
My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold
a variety of candy and nuts.
As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter
asked if we needed any help.. < br> I replied, 'No, I'm just looking at
your nuts..'
My sister started to laugh hysterically. The boy grinned, and I turned
beet-red and walked away.
To this day, my sister has never let me forget.
FOURTH TESTIMONY:
While in line at the bank one afternoon, my toddler decided to
release some pent-up energy and ran amok.
I was finally able to grab hold of her after receiving looks of disgust and
annoyance from other patrons. I told her that if she did not start
behaving 'right now' she would be punished.
To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said in a voice just as
threatening, 'If you don't let me go right now, I will tell Grandma
that I saw you kissing Daddy's pee-pee l ast night!'
The silence was deafening after this enlightening exchange. Even the
tellers stopped what they were doing.
I mustered up the last of my dignity and walked out of the bank with
my daughter in tow. The last thing I heard when the door closed behind
me, were screams of laughter.
FIFTH TESTIMONY:
Have you ever asked your child a question too many times?
My three-year-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I
was on him constantly. One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch in
between errands.
It was very busy, with a full dining room. While enjoying my taco, I smelled
something funny, so of course I checked my seven-month-old daughter,
and she was clean. Then I realized that Danny had not asked to go potty in a
while. I asked him if he needed to go, and he said 'No'.
I kept thinking, 'Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I
don't have any clothes with me.' Then I said, 'Danny,
are you SURE you didn't have an accident?'
'No,' he replied. I just KNEW that he must have had an accident,
because the smell was getting worse..
Soooooo, I asked one more time, 'Danny did you have an accident? This
time he jumped up, yanked down his pants, bent over, spread his cheeks and
yelled, 'SEE MOM, IT'S JUST FARTS!!'
While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing, he
calmly pulled up his pants and sat down.
An old couple made me feel better, thanking me for the best laugh
they'd ever had!
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, TESTIMONY:
This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for 2 days and a
very embarrassed female news anchor who will, in the future, likely
think before she speaks.
What happens when you predict snow but don't get any! We had a female
news anchor that, the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn't,
turned to the weatherman and asked:
'So Bob, where's that 8 inches you promised me last night?'
Not only did HE have to leave the set, but half the crew did too they
were laughing so hard!
Ha ha..........
