Buried.......Under a "Tidal Wave"

9/27/08 - Athens, GA- Alabama defenders Eryk Anders (32) and Lorenzo Washington (97) bring down Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford (7) during the second quarter of college football action Saturday night at Samford Stadium in Athens, GA. Stafford was called for intentional grounding on the play. (Jason Harless/The Tuscaloosa News)

The University of Alabama emphatically answered the question posed in this blog a day ago.

We asked, "Whose funeral will it be"?

Well, Georgia surely dressed for the occasion Saturday night in the 41-30 loss to the Tide......Clad in black jerseys for only the 3rd time in history........These dogs were tossed around like stuffed animal toys by an Alabama team seemly on a mission.

Due to the late start (7:45 pm).....I dosed off and missed the entire 1st quarter. When I awoke midway through the 2nd.....Alabama led 17-0.....In what was only a few blinks of the eyes.....it was 31-0. And this game was over.

Georgia's offensive line was overwhelmed.....and could not get a running game going. Stafford had no time to throw.......and receivers dropped balls.

On defense........Alabama out schemed and out blocked the Dogs......Their play-makers made plays.

As disappointing to the Bulldog Nation as this loss was.... in is what it is.

Georgia got beat by a superior team. That means the coaching staff as well as the players have to man up .......get tough.......for this is the SEC.......

In 2 weeks........a desperate Tennessee team comes to Athens.

Hope these Dawgs have learned a thing or two by then.

Happy Trails.......Paul Newman (1925-2008)

Hollywood legend Paul Newman dead at 83

This Hollywood star....with the stunning blue eyes......captivated the American public for several decades.

Who can forget "The Sting", "The Color of Money", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".....to name just a few.

And.....his passion for auto racing where his Newman/Haas racing team was very successful.

And........if you've ever been in the condiment aisle of a grocery store.....you have sure seen his Paul Newman salad dressings.

A different kind of Hollywood star.

Mr. Newman........thanks for the memories.....

So.......Whose Funeral will It Be?

This is getting interesting........from the Augusta Chronicle...

UGA Blackout = Funeral?

And then...........from ESPN....

Georgia's man in black fires back ... sort of

This Georgia "Blackout" thing is getting rather testy.

You remember........The Dawgs will don their black jerseys against Alabama on Saturday and will urge their fans to all wear black....in.......the "black out".

Well........an Alabama assistant coach was caught on video (and of course it made its way to YouTube) saying, "They (Georgia) will be wearing black........because they're going to a "motha fuckin" funeral"......Their own!

Ouch!

Ain't SEC football ..........fun?

And who's funeral ....will it be?

ESPN........7:45.......EDT........Saturday....

Friday Picks

Last week: 3-2

Season: 7-8

So close.....
we could easily be 15-0........but that is why Vegas provides the point spreads....Make no mistake about it ..........the "house" .......always wins. So...here's another week, another sucker.......and hopefully some winners.

Ohio State (-18) over Minnesota......Look for the Buckeyes to make a statement in their Big 10 opener....this could get ugly.

Tennessee (+6 1/2) over Auburn.....The tigers are still smarting from the loss to LSU.....Tennessee is backed into a corner.....a must win. Phil Fulmer is fighting to save his job....

Florida State (-5 1/2) over Colorado.......The Seminoles are due for an offensive explosion. Where is all that talent they recruited? It's now.....or never.

Arizona (+1 1/2) over N Y Jets........Arizona is a decent team....and I am not yet sold on these Brett Favre led Jets.

Chicago (+3) over Philadelphia..........Just when you think the Bears are toast.....they tend to win a game like this.....especially at home.

So there..........take it to the bank!

On second thought.....just put it under your mattress......

Ambushed....on the Oregon Trail

Read it..........for it did indeed happen:

Final1234T

For the first time since 1967, the Oregon State Beavers carved up a #1 ranked team. Oddly enough .......the team they beat in '67....was none other than the Trojans from Southern Cal...led by a running back named O J Simpson.

This game.....and the defeat of the seemingly invincible USC......has sent shock waves throughout the world of college football.

How did this happen? USC was a 27 point favorite.......they had a bye week........

Here's how.....USC opened the season with an impressive win over ACC school, Virginia. They then had a week off to prepare for 2nd ranked Ohio State.....and whipped the Buckeyes soundly.

Then.........USC had a week and a half........to read about how great they were.....maybe the best team ever.

And remember..........these are still 18 to 21 year olds.....

But about the game itself..........USC was out played, out hustled , out hit, out coached, and out manned. Oregon had more 1st downs, more yardage, and seemed they were the favorite from the start.

Oregon bunched the bully in the mouth..........USC........fought.........for a while........but ended up limping home to mommy .........

This seems to be an annual occurrence for the Trojans.....Last year, it was the lost to un-ranked Stanford.

The funny thing is ..........tomorrow.....against any of the top 10 teams in the polls.......USC would still be favored....go figure.......

Hump Day News & Views

My, my........

It's Wednesday .....already? Then, let's get started........

Black will be beautiful..........again!

Seems the University of Georgia has taken a liking to the color black. For the 3rd time in less than a year........Georgia will don its black jerseys as the 3rd ranked "Dawgs" take on number 8 Alabama on Saturday in what is being termed , "Black-out 3". Fans are being urged
to wear nothing but black.

Even ESPN is on the case. The popular Game Day pre-game show will air live from the UGA campus .......the first time in Athens in 10 years.

The Atlanta Braves win a one run game....and on the road.....

Yes.......it has happened....Last night , the Braves beat the Phillies , 3-2.......That is their second one run victory in a row after snapping that record setting 29 straight losses in one run games. It's been a tough year for these Braves.....We have been rather hard on them. As we wind down the regular season.....let us give them their due. They did play hard in all games...but this team just did not have the pitching.......and too many injuries derailed the run to the play-offs.

The Yankees ...are officially eliminated from post-season play....

Yes ..........the Yankees........The best team money can buy.......will not be in the post season. And....a team........with 1/10th of the Yankee payroll (the Tampa Bay Rays) will make it.

Oh how I love it! The Yankees, with the highest payroll in all of baseball ........will be watching the fall classic.....at home.....with the rest of us.

You Yankees.......you dissed Joe Torre ...........you made no significant trades...
....

You thought your "pinstripes" were the cure-all .......for everything. The world......is getting smaller.

Things.....I think I think.......

Fall.....is here. And with it........this wicked pollen....I'm stuffed up and miserable..........

This gas thing is about to make me mad........But it's nice to drive a company car.......with a company credit card......to relieve the pain.

John McCain is suspending his campaign to concentrate on the economic crisis? The republicans must really think the American public is stupid......Is this not politically inspired....or what? I'm just a simple man..........but what exactly.....can McCain do? For .......the economy? And why...........is he suspending his presidential campaign .......to "concentrate on the economic crisis.

Can .....he .....not "multi-task"?

If ......elected president.........will he stop doing everything ........to concentrate on ....one thing?

John McCain .....is a joke....and not qualified to be the president of the United States of America. He was a good soldier.......there have been thousands of them..........but that does not qualify you to lead a nation.

Note to Obama....."Keep on campaigning"!

Have.......a happy Hump Day!

Happy Trails.....Larry Munson

No.......he hasn't died...

But Larry Munson.....the voice of the University of Georgia....announced his retirement...effective immediately...

The Bulldog Nation is in shock....get over it!

The man will turn 86 come Sunday........He has been behind a microphone for 60 years.....43 of those years broadcasting Georgia football.

He was and is........one of a kind... He loved Georgia , movies, and the members of the opposite sex..........a man's .....man.

Here's a tribute.....courtesy of YouTube:

Joke of the Day

We got this off an email.....

Courtesy.......GaPeach913.....

Read.......and .....smile:

It is hard to find a joke today without a dirty word or two in it, but, here is one:

Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods.
A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch,
'Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?'
The birch says he cannot tell.

Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling.
The birch says, 'Woodpecker, you are a tree expert.
Can you tell if that is a son of a beech, or a son of a birch?'

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies,
'It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however,
the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in.'

Thoughts........From a Busy Weekend

Gasoline shortage.....in the deep south?

Yes, due the recent string of hurricanes, the shutting down of pipe-lines, and the annual switch to winter grade gasoline..........we have a shortage here in the deep south. And .......with all shortages....there is an emphatic economic repercussion. Supply and demand.....supply is low......demand is high. Across northeast Georgia pumps ran dry......with no shipments scheduled until mid-week.

The stations with gas .......are setting a 10 gallon limit. Well.....it doesn't work.......or it did not work with me. Today, I was prepared only to get 10 gallons....and maybe 10 tomor
row.

But the system has a few holes.....If you pay by credit card.......you can pump as much as you want. The pumps cannot be programed for a cut-off by the gallon.....

So.......I filled up........at $3.87 per gallon!

Why do I feel so proud..........to have "beaten"...... a system? This gasoline mess is making us all .......a bit mad..........a lot bitter.......and a tad selfish.

Some major statements were made..........

Yes.......yes..........

The University of Georgia and A. J. Green (pictured) traveled 1700 miles to smack around Arizona State, 27-10.....in a game that was not even close. Georgia, carried an attitude into Tempe.......and kept on hitting the Sun Devils in the mouth. On the road.......in front of 80,000 of the enemy........the Dawgs sent a message to the rest of the college football world, "We may not be USC.....but we can whip your tail.....any time........any place."

Alabama went into Arkansas ..........and just destroyed the Razerbacks.......Just reward to those hogs who hired disgraced former Atlanta Falcon coach, Bobby Petrino.....That squeal you now hear from Fayetteville ..........is a squeal of pain. Alabama is now 4-0.......and ranked in the top 10.....and........comes to Athens (this southern college town) come Saturday. Let the hype begin.

The Atlanta Falcons........yes.....our beloved birds....Yesterday, these Falcons actually overwhelmed a fellow NFL team. The Kansas City Chiefs ........are pathetic. They may just be the worst team in the league........but .......a win.......is a win. And winning 38-14 is something to crow about.

The Emmy Awards were actually on TV?

So I've been told..........This year's Emmy Awards had the worst television rat
ing in the history of the award show. Why? Have you seen the garbage network TV has been putting out the last few years? With the exception of a few excellent drama series, (House, Boston Legal...to name a few), this steady stream of stupid sit-coms coming out of Hollywood .......is just not working. Who still watches the networks? The best shows are on cable.....("Entourage" , " Curb your Enthusiasm", " The Soprano's".).........or in syndicated re-runs.....ala "Seinfeld"....etc. If it were not for sports......I would never tune in to NBC, CBS, ABC..........or FOX!

3-2..........is the best we could do.

Our Friday Picks results? Winners were: Troy (+20 1/2) over Ohio State........Florida (-7 1/2) over Tennessee ............and in the NFL, Tennessee (-5) over Houston. The losers? Virginia Tech finally played like they are capable of in beating North Carolina.....and Jacksonville came out of nowhere to upset the Indianapolis Colts. But.....we had a winning record.

War of Words

Radio interviews can be quite entertaining........

Especially when the interviewee is pissed off at the interviewer.

Such was the case this week at a Washington DC sports radio station. It was the "John Thompson Show", where Clinton Portis (the interviewee) went off on Brian Mitchell (the interviewer). Old man John Thompson had to referee......

See this clip......courtesy of YouTube....

Friday Picks

Last week: 1-4

Season: 4-6

Gotta
real good feeling about this weeks games.......

North Carolina (-3) over Virginia Tech......UNC is playing perhaps the best football in the ACC. Take the heels to win by at least a touchdown over an underachieving Hokie team.

Florida (-7 1/2) over Tennessee..........The gaters have too much offense, defense, and speed.....The Vols lost to UCLA.......who lost to BYU 59-0. 'nough said. Florida wins.....going away.

Troy (+20 1/2) over Ohio State.....Yes , my upset special.......The Buck-eyes are still without running back Beanie Wells......and......This is not your ordinary "mid-major" school. Troy has a lot of athletes. Ohio State will win the game..........but won't come close to covering.

Tennessee (-5) over Houston........The Texans will be over matched.....the Titans play a physical defense. With or without Mr. Young, they will more than cover this spread.

Indianapolis (-5) over Jacksonville.......The Colts are getting some key members of their offensive line back from injuries.....just what Peyton Manning needs.....more time to throw....and a decent running game. Poor Jacksonville.......these guys....so far this season.......can't get out of their own way.

Vegas odds.....notes.....

* All NFL home teams are favorites this week.......except Green Bay.....which plays the Dallas Cowboys.

* The largest spread in the NFL is the N Y Giants laying 13 1/2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

* The largest in college is Missouri laying 34........against the University of Buffalo.

Hump Day News & Views

Go west......young men!

It has been nearly 50 years since the University of Georgia has traveled to the western part of this nation to play a regular season football game. Their last trip to the left coast was in 1960....(a 10-3 loss at Southern Cal)....

This Saturday, the Bulldogs will make a trip to Tempe, Arizona to take on Arizona State in a match up of the SEC and the PAC 10. The 3rd ranked dogs are 3-0.....while the Sun Devils are 2-1.....coming off of an upset loss to UNLV.

It is nice to see Georgia scheduling real teams .......instead of the usual Division II victims in their non-conference games.

Something is wrong here....

The Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ned Yost earlier this week. That is their right.....their prerogative .......Last year, the Brewers were in position to get in the play-offs via the "wild card".....but faded down the stretch. The decision for Yost's firing is justified. The Bre
wers had just lost 11 of 14 games and are in danger of missing the play-offs , yet again.

But .......with the season two weeks from being over.....and only 12 games remaining....Why now?

Seems like a move made out of desperation ..........

Can you say "deja vu" again? ....

Oh.......those amazing Mets!.......Those Mets.....who last year........lost a 7 game lead with only 17 to play.

Those Mets......who fired manager Willie Randolph in the wee hours of the morning this past summer.

Well........they're up for an encore! Last nights 1-0 lost to the Washington Nationals (
the last placed Nats' ) knocked the Mets out of first place...........again......

I kind of feel sorry for the fans......but wait...........It's New York.....

Never mind........let 'em suffer.

5......in 10.......

We may never see this again.......It is definite we won't see it again this year.

For the first time ever, the AP college football poll, has 5 teams from the same conference ranked in the top 10. The SEC has Georgia (3rd), Florida (4th), LSU (6th), Alabama (9th), and Auburn (10th).

From Yahoo Sports:

AP Top 25

Sun Sep 14, 2008

  1. USC
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Georgia
  4. Florida
  5. Missouri
  6. LSU
  7. Texas
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Alabama
  10. Auburn
Finally........

In this southern college town, the temperatures will be in the 50's tonight. After a long hot summer, relief is finally here.......in the form of fall. Could the leaves be turning next?

Let's hope.

Have a great Hump Day.......

The NBA's Most Overpaid

We love lists.......especially top 10 lists.

This one involves the NBA's most overpaid "un-superstars"..........

Courtesy of Sean Deveney of "The Sporting News":

1. Stephon Marbury, Knicks. 2008-09 salary: $21.9 million. Marbury has moved from second place on the BBCRMOL to the top, and we should all hope he is duly flattered. Marbury's season ended with ankle surgery, and it's likely no one with the Knicks really noticed. He had averaged 13.9 points in 24 games. The follies of Isiah Thomas are many and costly (Jerome James will make $6.2 million, Malik Rose will make $7.6 million and Jared Jeffries will make $6 million), but Marbury's contract rules. There's only one way to make one of the NBA's worst teams its highest paid team, and that's to vastly overpay everyone.

2. Antoine Walker, Grizzlies. '08-09 salary: $9.3 million. Walker is emblematic of the Heat team that stormed to the 2006 championship. He got the ring, had some champagne, went to the beach and never really returned. He was already on the downward slope before the championship, but after that, the wheels fell off. He shot 39.7 percent the next year, then 36.3 percent in 46 games in Minnesota last year. Hard to say whether the Grizzlies will even let Walker on the floor this year, though his contract remains valuable in a trade (because it expires after the season). Either way, Walker has a team option next summer. Safe to say the Grizzlies won't be exercising it.

3. Ben Wallace, Cavaliers. '08-09 salary: $14.5 million. Maybe money really can't buy happiness. Wallace is a case in point. Something about the enormous four-year, $60 million deal Wallace signed with the Bulls in the summer of 2006 seems to have made him irreparably prickly and grumpy, to the point that the Bulls were trying to dump him a year after signing him. Wallace clearly isn't the athlete he once was, which has cut down on his ability to dominate defensively but has greatly increased his BBCRMOL status. He averaged 4.8 points and 8.4 rebounds on 39.2 percent shooting, which is now the Cavs' problem.

4. Jermaine O'Neal, Raptors. '08-09 salary: $21.3 million. Good health has eluded O'Neal. He has played 44, 51, 69 and 42 games in his last four seasons. Even when he was active, he hasn't been worth in excess of $20 million. It becomes imperative now that he get on the court and stay there, because the Raptors are sinking a lot of their future into the notion that O'Neal can boost Chris Bosh and this team into the upper level of the East. He can't do that in civvies.

5. Raef LaFrentz, Blazers. '08-09 salary: $12.7 million. LaFrentz is 31 and has been slowed by injuries throughout his career. If he had anything left to give, we wouldn't know it because he is not going to play behind Portland's pack of talented young big men. He managed just 39 appearances last year, averaging 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds.

6. Bobby Simmons, Nets. '08-09 salary: $9.9 million. The Bucks were happy to dump the remaining two years and $20 million of Simmons' contract. After a very productive season (16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds) with the Clippers in 2004-05, Simmons signed a five-year, $47 million deal with the Bucks, put up a so-so season and then missed an entire season with foot and ankle surgeries. He returned last year, but looked to be a shadow of his former self, averaging 7.6 points on 42.1 percent shooting. Those kinds of numbers earn you a place on the trade block and a place on the BBCRMOL.

7. Erick Dampier, Mavericks. '08-09 salary: $9.5 million. Not long ago, 7-footers just got paid, almost through very little effort of their own and no matter what evidence could be presented to show that they should not be signed. Dampier was a perfect example, getting a mind-boggling seven-year, $73 million deal with the Mavericks in 2004. This despite just one good season that came suspiciously in his contract year with the Warriors. Predictably, that was Dampier's only good year, as he has settled back into being a guy who blocks a shot or two, grabs seven or eight rebounds and has anvil hands. He has lots of money to count with those anvils, however.

8. Jason Kidd, Mavericks, and Shaquille O'Neal, Suns. '08-09 salary: $41 million combined. Oooh, the BBCRMOL loves big names! Despite good statistical production after his trade to Phoenix (12.9 points and 10.6 rebounds), the Suns were run out of the playoffs in the first round. Now the team has a new coach and is trying to reconfigure its plans around an aging veteran with a staggering salary. Sound familiar? It should, because it is almost the exact situation the Mavs are in with Kidd. Big-time veteran, decent numbers, lost a step, first-round playoff loss, new coach and, of course, enormous salary ($21.3 million) taking up more than a third of the team's allowed cap.

9. Eric Snow, Cavaliers. '08-09 salary: $7.3 million. Snow has made a long career out of being a pretty good, smart guy. He doesn't make mistakes, he is considered a leader and is well respected in and out of the locker room. He was injured a little last year, but even when healthy, he is beyond on-court usefulness. He averaged 1.0 -- yes, exactly one -- point per game last year. He played 22 games and scored 22 points. For a point a game and some veteran leadership, $7.3 million is a lot to pay.

10. Kenyon Martin and Nene, Nuggets. '08-09 salary: $24 million combined. Martin was relatively productive last year, with averages of 12.4 points and 6.5 rebounds. That's not worth $13.2 million, but it's an improvement. Nene was not productive, with just 16 games played. These two were supposed to be Denver's front line of the future, and the future is in danger of soon becoming the past. Marcus Camby is gone, and to replace him, the Nuggets have these two at $24 million. In fact, they'll have them for at least the next three years at $26 and $28 million, too. So, lots of fingers are crossed in Denver.

Lawyer ........Needs a Lawyer

From the Atlanta Journal Constitution.......

Will these guys ever learn? This time it is Lawyer Milloy, a safety with the Atlanta Falcons. Seems Lawyer did some TLC seeking at a strip club after the "Birds" returned home from their beat down at the hands of the Tampa Bay Bucs on Sunday.

Not only did he get stopped for speeding......there is also that DUI charge that seems to attack pro athletes in the wee hours of the morning.

Milloy should know better.....he is an NFL veteran .......a team leader.

For the "umpteen thousand" time.......nothing ever.....ever good happens.....when a pro athlete is out between 12 midnight........and 5 a.m.

Why Soccer will Never be accepted by the USA

Imagine..........100,000 football fans.......

The rest of the world doesn't really get our game of football.......but we've never had this:

Witchcraft rumor sparks riot at Congo soccer game

KINSHASA, Congo (AP)—Accusations that a soccer player was using witchcraft during a match in eastern Congo sparked a riot that killed 13 people, a U.N.-funded radio station reported Monday.

Most of the victims were between the ages of 11 and 16, Radio Okapi said. They were suffocated as panicked crowds ran for the exits during the mayhem Sunday in Butembo in eastern Congo’s North Kivu province.

Radio Okapi said police tried to control the violence at Matokeo stadium by firing into the air to protect their commander, who was hit in the head and wounded by fans.

The two local clubs involved were Socozaki and Nyuki System, the radio said.

Dozens of teenagers marched through Butembo’s dirt streets Monday in protest, and the regional governor, Julien Mpaluku, paid a visit to the hospital.

Mpaluku said the government was investigating.

He made no mention of witchcraft, but confirmed that soldiers had fired into the air to calm angry crowds. The shooting prompted panic instead, which became fatal “when the crowds all tried to leave at the same time.”

“Most of the dead were children, only two or three were adults,” Mpaluku said.

North Kivu has been the epicenter of violence between Congo’s army and rebels over the last year which has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

I think we'll stick with that old pigskin game........

Things We Learned From the Weekend

Southern Cal.......is good, really good. The men of Troy destroyed Ohio State, 35-3 to strengthen it's hold on the number 1 spot in college football's two major polls.

South Carolina........is not "USC".......The local Columbia papers still refer to this school as USC. You are not. You are the university of South Carolina..........that's it. You have lost this year to Vanderbilt. Saturday, you lost for the 45th time against Georgia versus 16 wins in the series history. "USC" is Southern Cal.........South Carolina is .....just South Carolina.

3-2..........No, this is not a baseball score. This was the final score of an SEC football game between Auburn and Mississippi State. But , I heard the game itself....was very exciting.....(yawn).

Speaking of baseball........they are still playing the summer classic. The Atlanta Braves took 2 of 3 from the first place N Y Mets over the weekend........Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs pitched a no-hitter.......and the Milwaukee Brewers fired their manager, Ned Yost.

The Atlanta Falcons.......are.....well.......the Atlanta Falcons, again. After a historic first win last week for rookie QB Matt Ryan, the birds laid an egg against Tampa, losing 24-9. That running game? which garnered 300 yards against Detroit? Yesterday they gained 105. And Ryan threw 2 picks. Well........the Kansas City Chiefs come to town next week. And that can't be all bad for the Falcons.

Friday Picks.........The Recap

As if we needed further proof.......

Vegas knows what it's doing. This week , we went 1-4.......against the spreads in our weekly football picks.

And the multi-million dollar hotels and casinos continue to prosper in the desert.

Here's a quick recap :

We picked Ohio State (+11 1/2)........Southern Cal had other ideas.....not only did the cover....they destroyed the #5 team.......35-3. Ouch!

We had Virginia Tech covering 6 1/2........They won .....but did not cover against Georgia Tech, 20-17........But we did have a winner in Notre Dame putting the beat down on Michigan.

In the pros, we missed badly. Denver won but did not cover a measly 1 1/2 points in beating San Diego, 39-38.

And ........if the Oakland Raiders are a train wreck..........where does this leave Kansas City? Whom they smacked around, 23-8.

Oh well.......there's always next week.

Vince Young.......Suicidal?

Suicidal? .....

That is the question. (
Report: Young search due to suicide talk (AP) )

By now you have heard of the latest from Tennessee Titan QB Vince Young. After Sunday's game, in which Young was ....well .....terrible.....(He was booed, threw a costly interception, and was injured).

Well, that night , Young disappeared........without his cell phone.....and his family called upon the Memphis police to find his where-abouts.

And ..........he was found.......watching a football game at a friends house....and eating hot wings.

His Mom issued a statement to the press pleading for us to just give Vince ........love....."He's depressed", she said.

Well, Mr. Young, welcome to the big time. You are an NFL QB. You are the cornerstone of the organization. You make millions annually ..........It comes with the territory.

If your psychic make-up is that shallow.......maybe .......just maybe.....you're in the wrong business.

In another sport, the saying is, "There's no crying in baseball".........

In the cruel world of the NFL..........not only is there no crying.......but there is no pouting, no blaming, no self pity, no understanding, no sympathy, no gain no pain, no shame, no nothing.......

Only the strongest of the strongest survive.

Vince Young has led a rather sheltered life.....High school All-American........College star....National Championship.

The NFL is different.....No longer can he "out-athlete " on a field with 22 great athletes.......as he did in high school and college.

The great ones always rise above.......and you never hear from their Mom........

Vince......you hearing this?

Friday Picks

Last week.....

We went 3-2..........Here goes...

Ohio State (+11) over Southern Cal.......For 2 weeks the Buckeyes have been listening to the sports talking heads saying they will be handed their heads in So-cal.......Look for Ohio State to play the game of their lives........keep it close....USC will not cover.

Virginia Tech (-6 1/2) over Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets win at Boston College was impressive....but.....when is the last time Tech has put together 2 meaningful victories in a row?

Notre Dame (-1 1/2) over Michigan.....It's put up or shut up for the Irish.......At home, they will roll over the Wolverines.

Denver (+1 1/2) over San Diego........Denver is for real.......playing at home against an underachieving Charger team? Take the Broncos and the points.

Kansas City (-3 1/2) over Oakland.......The Raiders are a train wreck......the Chiefs played New England tough last week.......This is a "gimme" ........

The Knowshon Hurdle

Every one is talking about the "play".......It happened last Saturday in the Georgia - Central Michigan game.

Knowshon Moreno had a run for the ages...........a play that will go down as one of the greatest to the "Bulldog Nation". A sure high-light ........A sure "Top 10" play on ESPN......

But a funny thing happened........You never got to see it on ESPN........They never showed that replay. After an outrage from Georgia fans, ESPN threw Fox Sports (the original broadcaster of the game) under the bus..........claiming Fox didn't include that particular play in the high-light feed.

Anyway........thanks to YouTube........we have for you here:

Happy Birthday....To Us!!

It was .....1 year ago today.....we started a blog.

We named it after the five children of our family.

I wrote the very first post. A bit crude.....raw.......but a post none the less.

Now we're closing in on our 400th post.......Amazing.

Here's our very first article.....from one year ago:

Hump Day News & Views

Yes, we know.....we're a day late.

Let us pause to remember........

Today is 9/11.......Doesn't seem like it's been 7 years since the world trade center twin towers collapsed and disappeared before our eyes from a couple of 747's striking them. Where were you?

Seven years ago.....this southern college town shut down.......along with thousands of cities across this nation. Schools closed early, the University of Georgia suspended classes, the Mall closed......Every one was glued to a TV set....watching, waiting.

This was the first time in my life time...........every television station.......local, national, cable, sports....and even movie channels .......were all carrying live coverage of that day's events.

It marked the first attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor ..........and the first ever attack on the mainland .

The aftermath was astonishing. As Americans, we became more patriotic overnight. We bought flags.......we learned the words to the National Anthem. Black, White, Asian, Hispanic........we now spoke to one another when we passed along the sidewalks or in a shopping mall. We ....were all Americans.....we all felt and shared a unique pain and sorrow.

New York City.........the New York we love to hate.......was now treated like our kid brother....(Don't mess with one of us)......and the rest of America came to it's aid.

Time has passed........it's been 7 years..........the initial reactions have subsided.....

But we all remember the morning of September 11, 2001........

9/11...........

Random Thoughts.......From an Interesting Weekend

5 on Five went 3-2 in our Friday picks......against the spread.

The Atlanta Falcons looked like a contending football team.....But before we get excited, was it that the Detroit Lions are just terrible?

Knowshon Moreno (pictured).......is a special talent. Did you see him actually hurdle that defender form Central Michigan?

Serena Williams won the US Open........and is now ranked #1 in the world ........again.....Imagine if these ladies (the Williams sisters) ever took tennis seriously.

I think the University of Georgia now fully understands the meaning of "style" points.

Don't look now, but the Tampa Bay Rays maybe in for a monumental choke job. Their lead in the AL east is down to a game and a half over Boston.

What has happened to the Chicago Cubs? Losers of 7 out of their last 10....and limping into the post season.

Tom Brady.....lost for the season? Say it ain't so.....

The Chicago Bears sure put a hurtin' on those Peyton Manning led Colts........Go Lovie Smith!

Are you as happy as we are? The NFL is back!

Just some random thoughts.......from an interesting weekend.

Friday Picks

By now......

You have noticed we here at 5 on Five are not big on predicting outcomes of pro and college football games versus the spreads Vegas lays out weekly.

With that said......here are our...........5 "sure" winners for Saturday and Sunday:

1. Tulane (+30) over Alabama.....The Tide will win ...but won't cover.

2. Georgia (-23) over Central Michigan......The Dawgs now realize the meaning of "Style Points".

3. Detroit (-3) over Atlanta.......No rookie QB (not named Manning or Vick) can come in and transform a sub .500 team.

4. Miami (+3) over New York Jets........Miami's Chad Pennington has a bone to pick with that Favre guy.

5. Pittsburgh (-6) over Houston..........The Steelers had an awfully quiet off-season....That's a good thing.

Ocho "Psycho"

Chad Johnson..........

Has made yet another statement. You remember Chad.......The Cincinnati Bengal wide receiver who is famous for bringing attention to himself.

Chad Johnson........who in 2007, raced .....a horse ....in a 200 meter race. Given a 110 meter head start, Johnson beat the horse by 12 .....horse lengths.

Chad Johnson.....the talented ......but self-centered one....who has not exactly led the Bengals into significant post season play.

Well.......Chad Johnson.......has spoken, again. Mr. Johnson legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco........Or when translated to English........Chad Eight Five....

And some still think our athletes are normal?

This goes back to 2006 during Hispanic Heritage month, when Johnson wore a jersey with Ocho Cinco.....but had to remove it before game-time because of NFL rules. (It wasn't his real name).

Well today it's real..........The new name is official.

Stupid..........condescending ...........but none the less....legal.

Many people have legally changed their names for various reasons.......

But a football player? Just to get attention?

I just don't get it.....

I hope you do.......Mr. Chad Eight Five...........

A Venus & Serena Show

In the 17th meeting ......

Between the sisters, Venus and Serena Williams......the two tennis superstars put on quite a show in New York last night.

Serena Williams upends sister Venus, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7), at US Open

In the previous 16 meetings between the two.......each had won 8........and lost 8.

This time , it was Serena who outlasted her older sister. With the parents sitting this one out.....older sister, Isha Price was there to represent the Williams family.

Normally the sisters are seeded in different brackets to potentially meet in final matches.......however , in this years US Open, the two met in the quarterfinals . Still , the match was slated for prime time........in Arthur Ashe Stadium.....in front of 20,000 fans.

Venus and Serena did not disappoint. With a dazzling display of tennis, they wowed the crowd.

And on this night.....it was Serena's turn.
